Her eyes met his for a brief moment, then flicked back to her desk.
She had piles of paper work to sort through, and it never helped that she was the senior partner. It didn’t seem to matter that she was the one who had been kidnapped. And that she had been in hospital recovering for two days. Nor that she still hardly knew or comprehended what had happened over the course of the last few weeks. She had been tricked into going to “work” for the FBI which turned out to be a corrupt section of the FBI…then she had been kidnapped…then she had had seen her partner take her place in that kidnapping, the likes of which she never wants to see again. He should never have gotten in that damn car! But she knew she owed her life to him, and she hated being put in that position.
Him.
He was sitting across the desk from her going over his much lighter pile of papers. He seemed to sit there, as if none of the events of the past week or so had happened. As if it was just a usual everyday case. She didn’t know whether to cry or be thankful. Not that she would cry in the squad room, no not her. Sure, she had been almost broken after it all, but somewhere during those last moments there had been quietness…a catharsis, she supposed, god he was getting to her.
She shoved her twirling mind and thoughts to the back of her consciousness; she needed to finish these damn reports. It didn’t matter that he was the only one that knew what really had happened to Roman in that car. Or that he was the one that had broken into an FBI agent’s garage and kidnapped him. Nor, the fact that she had only been kidnapped because they thought it would fit somewhere in their plan to get to him. She scoffed at that certainly there must have been some better way to grab his attention? His ex-wife? No, she conceded, attacking his current partner was perfect. She knew. She wasn’t dumb to all of his private investigations, she was just glad he was that much more of a detective rather than a con after all those years in prison to figure it out before…well, she decided, that didn’t bear thinking about. She was here, and that was what mattered, the ‘now’.
She stopped herself from groaning, he had invaded her thoughts, so much she was thinking like him. She ignored the fact that it had been helping her more than confusing her lately. It was all, that she had had, in her captivity, her mind, her thoughts, his thoughts, leading her through the tunnel. This time she did groan and she ignore the probing eye from the other side of the desk.
Focus. She told herself. She was here. At work. And a pile of papers were also here with her, she just needed to make them disappear. She looked up for a brief second, and met his eyes again. He smiled at her, confusing her again. Didn’t he know she hated paper work? Of course he did. She glared at him and commenced writing. She had a new focus, by hurrying up; she’d be able to get out of his constant gaze. She needed air.
