I mean that. Each one of you that is on my friends list and I've ever spoken to be it on your journal or mine.
I see you and thank you for being you.
I was trying to find Oprah's last episode opening monologue (which when I was watching tonight I found out the whole episode was basically her monologue! Wow), because it definitely held a few points I'd like to make a nod to. But alas no one had it on YouTube (or they are very strict and quick about it, nobody said Harpo Studios ain't in it for the money).
But anyway, I was on YouTube and the comments people made about Oprah or her leaving well, some of them were just horrendous.
And hey, I might be gullible and naive, but even I know that Oprah Winfrey couldn't possibly have meant each and every word she uttered every single episode, everyone has a bad day surely she must have felt that sometimes she couldn't have been bothered. But to say things like "Good riddance" and "She's an actor she doesn't care!" -Those were some of the nicer negative looks I hardly want to post the really bad ones here. *good vibe space* ;)
But really? I expect that she acted in at least some (if not a lot) of parts of her life, even if it happened to have been a 'media/government' conspiracy and all her childhood horrors weren't real (which I do not believe is faked at all), she would have to be the best damn actor ever to keep up the face she's shown the world, for over 25 years! Even for the amount of money she ended up with, any actor would have gone mad OR morphed into their character. So either way I do not doubt the fact that in some way she has and does care about the people of the world that she's met or helped.
I cringe a lot when she gets too preachy for my liking, sure, but to say that she really hasn't helped the world? Come on, what do you expect or want? Oprah is God (or whatever power) and takes away everything painful and makes the world peaceful? She stated it today "We all strive for validation". And that very power, and hunger for things we want or perceive to want will sometimes make us unrestful and/or violent creatures.
I don't think she's not done anything useful. Or that 25 years was a total sham, though some might have definitely been. Of course more recent years of gifts and giving was part PR, since there is always a choice of whether to say brand names or just "you're all getting TVs!".
But she knows she's not going to use all that money in her lifetime, so why not? Builds her name, and it possibly helps people. Those thousands of educations sure might.
If she didn't care rumours and stories would be let out of the bag faster than you could blink. Reputations in media business, talk goes around quickly, people can't stop whispers no matter the restraining order, law or fine.
Here watch the Barbara Walters segment about Oprah. I embed and go to (
this) link and watch a section of Oprah's last show. Yes, its almost cringeworthy at times but really, why wouldn't you want something hopeful and uplifting in your life. And those that say the ones that really need it don't see it, well I agree and disagree. The people who have been watching Oprah is most of the everyday society we take note about, and these are the people we have to try and get along with. Sure you can not really care about her if you've never seen her interviewing skills at work, but really, I don't know how you could hate her unless its because you want to be her.
BUT. I personally do not think Oprah's voice is her best asset, (no not gonna make that joke today) but like she says her voice was being the voice for everyone else allowing them to talk through their own emotions. She did serious segments to really silly things to everyday cooking.
This is the message that Oprah has been playing for years. I don't know if T.J Thyne (of Bones fame) was ever on her show, but this short movie is succint in describing things Oprah tried to keep telling people. (Yes, she got me to get my icon out again. She has the power! ;P)
I hope this entry didn't offend anyone who dislikes Oprah (I'm still not sure how that is possible?), or for those that see her as a demi-Goddess of some kind, because I know I personally don't fit her into either of those categories.
PS. How the heck did she not miss a day of work in 25 years? (4,561 shows!!) She is a god of some kind isn't she? O_o
PPS. I missed the first part or episode one of the finale three episodes, does anyone know where I could watch it?
