2011 Australian Eastern Floods

Jan 20, 2011 00:20

So, a bit of a serious post now. A few people have asked me to keep them updated on the situation with the floods here. This is a cover of all of them that have been happening on the Eastern coast. I'm tired of hearing of floods as I'm sure many many people are, especially those affected.

Before I state things I'm sure you've all now heard of the QLD (Queensland) floods, if not on the news around LJ and the various fic and creative fundraisers. More are even predicted for in a few months time in QLD. But I caught a bit of the first Oprah visits Australia special and when she was in Melbourne, she visited Federation Square and addressed the crowd, she mentioned the floods. Obviously this was filmed late last year, before the onslaught of the QLD floods and before even the NSW floods that have almost all receded, and definitely before the major Melbourne/Victoria floods that are happening right now. We had a bit of a flood late last year and people didn't like that, after all why would they? Property destroyed homes damaged. But now its back and worse, worse than the floods in 1933 and some are even going so far as to state that it'll be the worst in recorded history. So, we might be over *those* Nov/Dec floods. But not these ones. Today it was just announced that the first Victorian flood victim was pulled from waters an 8-year-old boy.

Some more facts from various floods below:
Victorian floods
~Many leevees have broken and more 62 towns are affected, with thousands of people are evacuating to temporary shelters as their homes are being inundated.

~Floods will threaten thousands of properties across regional Victoria for up to 10 more days, and the Premier, Ted Baillieu, has warned more pain is to come. Already one death, that of an eight-year-old boy, has been confirmed in the deluge.

~In Kerang a power substation was still under threat last night as the Loddon River was expected to peak beyond the major flood level at 77.9 metres above sea level.

~In Horsham the Wimmera River peaked at 4.71 metres early yesterday, almost a metre over the 107-year-old high-water mark of 3.87 metres, but later fell back to 4.67 metres and began retreating.

~More than 200 homes are expected to be hit by floodwaters in the north-western town of Warracknabeal when the rising Yarriambiack Creek peaks tonight.
Source one and source two for more information and pictures. Queensland flood relief appeal. I haven't heard word on if Victoria will have one set up, they're meant to be getting a bit from the government but I'm not sure when that will pull through. Plus flood waters are still rising and a deluge expected later this week so damage won't be known until later. EDIT: Victorian flood appeal through the Red Cross here. International donations accepted select 'outside Australia'.
