Introduction

Press conferences in general could be either intriguing or boring, or somewhere in-between. Thus, Lois hadn’t had much expectations when she drove away from Metropolis, heading towards the distant city of Dainty. Actually, the fact that she was in danger of running late drove every other thought from her mind. Which was unfortunate as it made her to fail spotting several odd-looking and -acting people in the town she had to drive through to get to Dainty. Perhaps if her car radio had been on, the broadcast might’ve caught her ears, but in her haste she didn’t even notice the silence. Instead, she left Harvey’s Cleft behind, being none the wiser.

~~~
The press conference was normal enough. Until a corpse walked on and began to eat a journalist. Before Lois could blink, all hell broke out and suddenly the bigwig she was supposed to be listening to was vacantly stumbling towards her. The zombie made a swiping move, but Lois’ reflexes were too fast for it and she managed to dodge away before sprinting out of the room and slamming the door after her.
“Insert witty joke about politicians here,” she mumbled distractedly, pressing her back against the wall.
A noise from one end of the corridor caught her attention. She stood there hesitatingly, her inner investigative journalist battling her inner primal animal, but was spared from a decision when another - alive - woman ran out from around the corner followed shortly by a couple of zombies. The woman skidded to stop in front of her and gave her a quick startled assessment. Unfortunately that also gave one of the zombies time to catch up. Thankfully, the woman was quick on the uptake because Lois only needed to point behind her when she promptly swung around and brained the zombie with the complimentary fruit basket she was holding. Then, without missing a beat, she grabbed Lois’ hand and pulled her into a run.
They actually managed to get out of the building without many complications, though there were several times when they had to sharply change direction to avoid running straight into zombies. They were now seated on a roof of a small building nearby, catching their breath. The other woman was still holding onto the fruit basket that had survived surprisingly well, with even some fruit still inside.
“Any idea what’s happening?” Lois asked finally once she was sure she could control her voice.
“No,” the woman answered, “Those things just showed up out of the blue and I didn’t take time to look more closely into it.” She shifted around suddenly.
“I’m Donna, by the way. Donna Noble,” she offered her hand, which Lois accepted.
“Lois Lane. From Daily Planet,” she added.
“Oh. You were here for that environmental thing,” Donna nodded
“Yeah,” Lois sighed
They sat in silence for a bit, unsure what to talk about now. A gaggle of zombies passed below them, thankfully unaware of the women’s presence. Lois followed them with her eyes and then sighed again.
“Wish I was back in Metropolis,”
“You think it’s safer there?” Donna asked.
“Yeah, actually I do,” Lois realised and sat up straighter. Donna smiled wryly, but then frowned again.
“What’s to guarantee that something like this isn’t happening over there too? From here it seems to spread quite fast,” she wondered
“Actually we had something like this a few years back,” Lois remembered, “I don’t remember much of it, I got infected too.”
Donna almost fell over as she involuntarily shifted away from the younger woman. Lois, who didn’t notice that, continued on.
“But we also have these heroes lurking around, helping people out. They fixed everything back then too. I could do with one of them right now,” she concluded.
“I could do with the Doctor, he’s good at fixing things,” Donna muttered as she calmed down.
“I don’t think a doctor could help with this,” Lois doubted
“Oh, I didn’t mean A doctor I meant THE Doctor,” she smiled distractedly at Lois’ confusion, “It’s hard to explain. He basically travels around, gets into trouble and fixes things. I’m… kind of an assistant to him. Except I’m on holiday right now,” she paused for a moment then growled softly, “Next time he tells me to take a holiday I’ll just stay in one of TARDIS’ rooms.”
Before Lois could ask what she meant by that, there was a ‘thump’ behind them. Apparently a zombie had spotted them from the window of next building and, not being capable of rational thought, had jumped out onto the roof the women were inhabiting. Luckily, it had also broken several bones in landing, making it rather sluggish in getting up. Donna once again took initiative and pulled Lois away.
“We need to get out of the city!” she shouted as she begun to climb down.
~~~

Avoiding zombies had become more difficult in the meantime. There didn’t seem to be any other living soul in the city besides the two of them. Zombies were crawling everywhere, often surprising them by showing up in unexpected places and scaring them out of their hiding spots.

Their first idea had been to get a car and just drive off. That had begun quite well as the first car they found happened to have the keys still in ignition. Unfortunately they found a traffic jam just three blocks away and had to abandon their new vehicle before any zombies noticed them and trapped them.

They also upgraded their weaponry as they snuck along the streets. Lois now had a baseball bat that had been discarded on the ground, and a gun for emergencies she’d rifled out of a police car. Donna had thrown away her fruit basket and found herself a broken street sign and a swivel knife. The blunt weapons ended up being used so often that Lois begun to worry they wouldn’t last until city limits.

“Well, here we are,” Donna commented after making sure that their latest zombie wasn’t moving any more.

She was right, there were no more buildings ahead of them, just nature and a road. All in all, things were good. They had, amazingly enough, managed to avoid zombie related injuries, though both of them sported various bruises and scratches all over them. Lois also had a cut on her collarbone from leaning through a broken car window.

“Now what?” Lois asked, lowering her bat.

“Now we need to get out of here,” Donna shrugged.

“There’s a town named Harvey’s Cleft that way,” Lois pointed ahead of herself, “We can go there to rest and then figure out the next step”.

“Sounds good enough,” Donna agreed and started to walk, Lois following a second later.
