In the Garden

For as long as Jeanne and I have lived here I've said I wanted to have a garden on the deck. However, with our decks being condemned by the state, it was not wise to putter out there. But this summer, our decks are brand-spanking new and inhabitable. Also, with the knowledge that I won't be working this summer and will have time to putter, I'm more inclined to start something that I can take care of.

Last week I bought a bunch of flats - marigolds in orange and yellow; fake Impatients that do well in direct sunlight; these cool bright yellow and orange flowers that close up when it's cloudy; some basil; and a tomato plant.
Since it's still pretty cool I've been puttering getting things planted in the evening.

I have a hand-spade I adopted from Mom's things, as well as a three-tiered planter and some tables I took from Mom and Dad's deck. Once I get myself all situated, I'm going to plant geraniums in Dad's planters because that's what Mom would've done. I've been very, very happy getting my hands dirty. Even if my tomato plant doesn't make it - which at this point it looks like it won't because when I tried to hang up my Topsy-Turvey I dropped it and broke the stem - it doesn't matter because I can just smell the leaves. Tomato leaves = happy place.

I went to Target the other day for supplies - I really needed a hose. I was not going to plant all these flower boxes and then have to run back and forth to the sink sixty billion times to fill up my watering can to water everything. So, I found a stone colored hose - very happy - and then wandered through the gardening section. I considered buying some fake Crocs to wear but then I stumbled upon the thing that makes me the *most* happy. A gardening hat. It's a woven, floppy hat and I love it. I love it so much! My deck gets direct sunlight in the afternoon, so even if I'm out there in the evening I still need some sun protection. It was so funny, when I was on line to buy my purchases, a man came up and asked me, "Where did you get that hat?" I think that's awesome.

Tonight I finally have everything planted - even my poor tomato plant that I don't think will survive. I feel very accomplished.
