Meta - Repeated Language

May 10, 2009 09:49

One of the things I love about our show is its use of language. Very deliberate choices are made with certain words and phrases. ( Let's give this a closer look, shall we? )

supernatural, meta

Seriously, I have no idea how the writers are going to rein them back in without it seeming like a messy patch up.

I think you're right about what Dean really said in that final showdown. He will hunt Sam, and if nothing's changed in his demeanor or blood drinking habits, Dean will kill him, because like it or not, he's more or less under orders from his supreme commander and I don't think he can bear letting him down even now.

I'm so sad to see Sam pick Ruby over Dean, but Dean did the same thing when he vowed his body and soul to Castiel. I'm secretly hoping the Ruby and Castiel are really allies and that all will be well. I'll settle for Dean killing Ruby, though, and for Castiel to at least help Dean when Lucifer Rises.

Thanks for putting that together!

I think Dean's known for a long time that this was coming. I mean, that's the bomb John dropped on him in In My Time of Dying - save Sam or kill him. Dean's been desperate to save Sam ever since. But I think, Dean was always confident he could save Sam - as long as they were working together as a team. The whole drinking demon blood thing is out of bounds and Dean knows it.

I found it very interesting how Castiel phrased Dean's oath (that's a whole other meta in itself!), because Dean's obedience hinges on following orders as obediently as he'd follow his own father's orders. Dean of Season 1 would have an instant reaction and follow orders with no question; Dean of Season 4 is a very different animal. I think that's our loophole, but I know know how it's going to play out.

This is great! The repeated and shared language is really interesting--it reinforces the idea that the Winchesters have their own private, intimate world, that's been remarkably consistent across the seasons. I love your point that Dean more often uses those repeated phrases, while Sam tries to find his own, original words. And that Dean has been "pushed to a place where he longer has words of his own." How heartbreakingly true ( ... )

Yes! I knew there was a moment when Sam called Dean "kiddo" but I couldn't bring it to mind. The fact that it happened in a Season 4 episode makes total sense - Sam had lived without Dean for months and fully stepped into his role as hunter. When Dean is returned, Sam percieves him as weaker and in a "younger" role - Dean is the one Sam needs to protect. Sam knows he's stepped out of the role of "youngest" and "juvenile" to the point where he can now use the phrase in relation to someone else, but Dean doesn't see this.

That use of "you" is very interesting - I didn't catch that. I'll have to go read your entry on it!

I had a deep thot.
Do you think the writers chose the "Honeymoon suite" and made such a show of it. That they were basically saying that the Honeymoon is over?

I never even thought of Honeymoon Suite outside of Sam doing something un-Samlike. That's an interesting deep thought. Hmm...

I think so. I read a meta earlier today treating the whole ep as a divorce. I'm sorry I can't remember the url...

I also think that's food for a meta of its own -> how Sam checks into the Honeymoon suite with Ruby, but leaves it alone to go into the unknown future without the safety of family or other human relations, to only have the company of demons to look forward to. How sad for him, really.

Look how freakin thinky this fandom is.

I have to admit, I've been waiting for the divorce for awhile now.
and I'm enjoying the tension.
I'm not one of those.... I want the boys together. I want conflict and strife and and baby eating.... Oh look! Kripke even provided that. LOL!

*loves on your brain*

Both John and Dean spoke out of fear. They were so terrified for Sam that they lashed out angrily, laying down an ultimatum that there was no coming back from.

And Sam's been there before. But Sam had been at odds with John his entire life. Dean had been his ally and his protector. Sam's being somewhat of a late bloomer and walking away from Dean was his statement of his adulthood and independance.

I agree - both John and Dean spoke out of fear. Desperate fear. And people say stupid things when the reptilian brain takes over.

Couldn't Sam's statement of adulthood and independance have been a note with a nice candygram or something? Choking the life out of his brother is not the way to go!
