You messed with the wrong person.

An email I just wrote to "Ombuds", an office that supposedly works on conflicts at the workplace...

I am an employee of --- and I am involved in a troubling situation. On Friday, I received an email from Professor ---- of (department), having never had previous contact with him. It seems that he took an issue of (our newspaper), in which faculty and staff simply listed their names as LGBT-identified or supportive, and then got all our emails and sent us a list of books and information on reparative therapy, why “homosexual make bad parents” and other extremely offensive listings, saying that he wanted to provide information from “the other side.” After contacting my HR person, she decided to treat it as a hate crime and brought in University Police.

I interviewed briefly with the police, who then went to speak to the Professor. The Professor admitted to having sent this email for the past 5 years to people listed on the OUT list and Allies list. Later I found out that he has been looking up student emails, which is a definite breach of authority and duty, and sending the email to them as well. He has also petitioned the current Provost to shut down the Office of LGBT Equality because they do not support “ex gay” therapy.

Now, it is one thing to have this kind of opinion on the subject, and to share the opinion in a public forum, but to directly email other staff, faculty, and students from one’s work email to their personal emails is quite another thing. It is inappropriate, discriminatory on the basis of sexual orientation, and harassment. I feel that not enough action has been taken at this point and would like to speak to someone with regards to what else can be done.

Thank you for your time.

Friday was a busy day for me and this isn't over yet. I'm trying to get in touch with our newspaper to do a story on this. And I will be following up with my HR person to make sure the Professor is written up by Personnel. 5 years, people. And no one has really spoken up about this until now :(

pride, work
