It was a most productive weekend. My parents arrived about an hour after the contractors left. And while the work was done and lovely, they left quite a mess. Would we be able to use a USB one on the printer to allow me to print wirelessly from my laptop on the same network?

No, they make special ones for that though (and none I've tried have worked all that well). Look into having the desktop share the printer over the network though - that'll let you print to it as long as the desktop is turned on.
