Roughing it, beach style

Back from my extended weekend/birthday extravaganza. As an added bonus, my boss isn't here today :)

On Friday night, I went to the local cafe to partake in a planning meeting for GreenBeLT Pride, mostly regarding our booth at DC Pride, a first for us. I'm excited because it'll give our group and our town a lot of visibility. We're doing our best to turn Greenbelt into "Queertopia" (our part of the homosexual agenda lol) The planning meeting gave way to our "every other Friday" gathering at which I think we had 14 people at least. A few of us left early to take part in a s'mores roast going on at a campsite our friends rented at the nearby park. Dark chocolate s'mores were had, as were laughs at C who couldn't understand why anyone would want to sleep outside in a tent when there are so many Quality Inns in the world.

Early Saturday evening, after doing chores and yardwork all day, S & I met her family at the Cheesecake Factory in White Flint. They were taking me out for my birthday meal and yes, the waiters all sang and I got to blow out a candle on top of mini hot fudge sundae (which didn't compare next to the Godiva brownie sundae we ordered for dessert mmm). Later, we all went to see S's show (my 3rd time, their 1st). Sadly, I have just gotten word that I may not be needed to help out during closing weekend after all. I can still shadow next weekend, but the chance they'll actually need me is small. Oh well :P After the show, we went to our producer friend's house for a party. She has cats, so I couldn't stay inside long (allergic), but the weather was beautiful and a bunch of us hung out on the patio near the fire pit and roasted marshmallows.

On Sunday, which was my actual birthday, we hosted a brunch. A nice-sized group of people attended and we had tons of food since it was a potluck- S set up a bagel bar and made bacon and mimosas. Other people brought pastries, fruit, baked things, etc. It was really nice sitting outside chatting with everyone, although I'm a little neurotic at the start of parties that I'm hosting lol. Later on, S did her show and when she got home, we packed up the car and left for the beach. It's amazing how quickly one can drive to the beach at 11pm :) We stayed at a cheap motel that evening and only had 1/2 hour to go the next morning before we arrived at Rehoboth.

That brings us to Monday morning. We walked around town for a bit and got breakfast at The Bake Shoppe (our rating: 8 out of 10). Then we drove to our campground, Cape Henlopen State Park. Our campsite was lovely although there were a lot of biting flies. Still, I'd prefer biting flies than mosquitos- at least there's nothing left after they get you. We pitched the tent and then gathered up all our beach stuff and proceeded to walk to the beach. We thought it would be a close walk from the campsite; it was not. We lugged all our beach crap (it turns from "stuff" to "crap" at this point) about one mile to the beach in the hot sun. The end of our journey was uphill over a sand dune and we nearly passed out when we got to the beach itself. Later we found out we could've driven to a spot a quarter of a mile down from where we were, but at least we were well-exercised :P The weather was perfect for the beach and we spent a few hours relaxing. The water was ice cold so we didn't get in further than our feet, but it was pretty.
We walked back to the campsite, stopping at Fort Miles to check out some cannons from WWII. Then we showered at the bath house and went out for a nice dinner at The Pig + Fish, which is nicer than it sounds (8 out of 10). After stuffing ourselves silly, we walked around the town some more and then sat on the beach in the moonlight before returning to camp. We were too tired (and full) to make a campfire as originally planned so we went to bed. Unfortunately, our air mattress had a slow leak so at 5:30am, we awoke to a little bit of sunlight and our butts touching ground through the mattress. I pumped it back up and we went back to bed until about 7:30am. Strangely enough, there were no insect noises at night, but instead weird bird sounds, like yipping puppies, and also the sound of pine needles falling from the trees onto our tent. We were also able to hear the ocean from far away which was nice.

The next morning, S made pancakes and coffee, and we had some fresh strawberries we had purchased from a roadside stand the day before. I was determined to make a fire and burned some twigs in the fire pit and roasted one marshmallow lol. We then packed up the campsite and went to the Outlets for shopping. I burned a hole in my wallet buying a skirt and top from Anne Taylor, two shirts and cropped pants from Calvin Klein, and a watch from Fossil. Happy birthday to me and yay for no sales tax in Delaware! We ate lunch back in town at Lori's cafe because it's a very cute place and shares my namesake :D (rated 8 out of 10, again)Later on while we were walking around town, someone gently slapped my arm and said "Thanks for coming, you two!" and it was none other than Lori herself. We would totally be friends with her if we lived there. lol. She makes awesome chicken salad according to S and the cute gay boy working in the cafe.
Later on we played minature golf at the Sea Shell Shop (S kicked my butt) and ate dinner at Catcher's restaurant. We were not impressed (4 out of 10) and decided to get some caramel popcorn and take one last walk on the beach to make it all better. We made it home in 2 hours and 10 minutes which is really incredible.

I'll have pictures posted either tonight or tomorrow :)
