So I was in San Jose for a little while last week. Took a nice relaxing road trip with a couple buddies and made the 664 mile journey down south last wednesday at midnight (crazy, yah? It's what my aund did every time she would drive back down to Sacramento after visiting here).
I unintentionally ran into one of my relatives on my dad's side of the family. The distant relatives. Well, just in the fact that I don't really know them all that well. So a few buddies of mine and I were grabbing lunch at this food court at The Great Mall, and for some reason Chinese food sounded really delicious that day. Hop on over to Mr. Wu's, ordered up my food and paid. Suddenly the woman asks if I'm Chinese or Vietnamese.
I say Chinese and Vietnamese. The following bits of conversation were completely in Vietnamese, so I'll just half-assedly translate them for you.
She then proceeds to ask if I know someone named Tai... or if I'm Tai's son...
No... I'm Cau's son...
After some deliberation in her head, she suddenly comes to a conclusion. "I'm your great-aunt! You know, A Khiu Po?"
And that's where the connection slapped me in the mouth. So we catch up a little bit, also finding out that my grandma had called up the relatives in San Jose to wish then a happy new year and possibly notify them that I was in town for a few days.
I think she saw the resemblance of my dad in me and somehow recognised that. If it weren't for the spiked hair, accessories and bulkier build, I would look a lot like my dad.
And to top off that experience, she gave me Li Xi before I took off. Hell fuckin' yeah. :D
