Character name: Patchouli Knowledge
Fandom: Touhou Project
Timeline: After events of 12.3: Hisoutensoku
Age: Unknown, but most sources place her at well over 100 years. Her physical appearance appears at around 16~18.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Patchouli (hereby referred to as “Patchy”) is, by race and trade, a magician. She specializes in the elements of wood, fire, water, metal, earth, sun, and moon, the elements that represent the days of the week of the Japanese calendar. By such, she is sometimes referred to as the “one week wizard”. In a non-magical note, her immense time spent in the library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion (elaborated on in a moment) and all its books have rendered her something of a scholar and intellectual. Unfortunately, this time has also rendered her physically frail, anemic, asthmatic, and prone to sickness.
How would they use their abilities?: Patchy is a recluse in the mansion's library, spending most of her time studying. The majority of her magics are devoted to either further study or in keeping out unwanted visitors. Her power is vast and refined, having the better part of a century to study them, but her frailty prevents her from using a lot at once, lest she collapse from exhaustion.
A side note: The Spell Card Rules present in Touhou Project's canon also limit her abilities, as they dictate she may only use a set of prepared spells (written on cards, hence the name) in any conflict. Given that the SS Thor does not abide by these rules, this fact is more or less null, though worth noting.
Appearance: Patchy usually appears tired, her purple eyes half-closed most of the time. Her hair is a deep purple, somewhat wavy but more or less kept straight. Its length tends to vary, even among canon works, but tends to fall to her lower back most consistently. Two lengths fall in front of her, both tied with a red and blue ribbon. She has a lighter purple nightcap, a red and blue ribbon attached on opposite sides and a yellow crescent moon on the front.
Her daily wear is more or less a set of pajamas. A vertically striped light-purple undershirt that goes down to her calves under an open darker-purple nightrobe. Her clothes are quite baggy and loose, hiding her physique, but it is hinted that she is quite small. Additional ribbons are on her robes and purple boots. Lots of purple going on here.
She is often seen carrying or reading a book of some type, so much so that spotting her without a written work of some sort is extremely rare indeed.
(A picture, for reference) Background/Personality: (NOTE: a large portion of this section is derived from fan works, given that these works are often the bulk of character development, derived from the relatively simple characterization from the main series.)
Patchy is a recluse living in the library in the Scarlet Devil Mansion, home of the Scarlet vampire sisters. She and her servant, Koakuma, serve as the mansion's librarians, keeping the place organized and clean. All of her time is spent in that library, reading or studying, and thus she rarely exits. There have only been three recorded cases where she is outside at all, each of which she was investigating some crisis or commotion.
The first case was during the events of Immaterial and missing Power, where an oni spread her influence to create a strange mist that triggered an epidemic of partying and festivals. Patchy left the library to investigate after the event was brought to her attention by Marisa Kirisame, who was snooping around for an answer to the mist herself. Conversations with other characters notes that Patchy prefers to not answer straight questions asked of her, though she is direct and concise when asking questions for herself, overall not too fond of talking to others in general.
The second outing was during Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, an event wherein strange weather patterns were present throughout Gensokyo. Patchy was the first to notice the weather's tie to the characters' temperaments and abilities. As with the last outing, Patchy prefers to not talk too much to others, though this time she resorts to force more willingly for the sake of experimentation.
Her last outing was, admittedly, not much an outing at all. She assists Marisa with an underground excursion, Marisa going in to do the work while Patchy remained in the library and remotely gave intelligence and support. She is more open in giving info this time around, but will still leave Marisa to deal with some opponents on her own as she researches the situation.
All other times, Patchy remains in the Scarlet Devil Mansion's library, away from contact with others. She highly detests unannounced visitors to the library, calling them “rats” invading her space. The dislike of others in her library is not all unfounded, as Marisa, her most frequent visitor, often stops by to “borrow” books, though she has yet to return one. She will quickly resort to her sorcery to drive Marisa and the like away, a feat that she could accomplish easily, given her prowess, but due to her extremely frail physical state, most of her attempts prove futile.
Despite distractions, though, Patchy has benefited from spending so much time in the vast library. The books themselves are varied, ranging from Gensokyo newspapers to magic tomes to works of literature from the outside 'real' world. She has read all, if not most of these, and so has developed an intelligence in a wide range of areas, and often knows just how to find or derive any information she doesn't already know.
Have you read up on how the game works?:
What is the name of the Guide plug-in that allows characters to communicate with each other: Flaming Ferret. (Further proof of the fact that any object + being on fire = awesome)
Also, name three ways your character can earn money on the ship:
-Taking official jobs and missions
-Accepting freelance work from or with other characters
-Mooching off, stealing, or otherwise begging off of other characters, or any other creative and plausible way to get money.
1st person sample: [The Guide is set up on a desk, the camera pointing at Patchouli. The room is dark save for a small lamp on the desk just off-screen, illuminating her face as she writes in a book on her desk. She does not look up as she speaks.]
It's only been a few hours since I've shown up in this place. The SS Thor, they call it.
[she talks quietly and quickly, a hint of nervousness in her voice and face.]
I've located the library in this place already. It is different. Not as large as mine back home, but I-... I can deal with it for now.
[her hand starts to quiver a bit, and she takes a breath to try and calm herself]
Their records on magic are woefully inadequate, however. A few of my tomes showed up with me, but most of my work is-... is gone. They've said that this Guide here has information on it, but I have not gotten a chance to look into it as of yet.
[she puts down her pen, unable to write. A tear passes down her cheek.]
I don't care if the world's gone. I don't care if I never get it back. All I want... All I want is my library. That's all...
[She reaches up to the guide quickly, and the feed cuts.]
3rd person sample: The library of the Scarlet Devil Mansion was the same as ever. Dark, musty, smelling of mold and dust from lack of ventilation and sunlight, but such was Patchouli's home. Right here, in that library. She sat at her usual spot at a desk in a far-off corner, books piled high around her, one open in front as she writes in it. It's a usual day, nothing out of the-
crrrrreeeaaaakk
The sound reverberated from the large door at the entrance to the library, carrying across like an ominous call of warning. Patchouli gave a sigh. Even far across the library, she knew who it was. Only one person would bother not knocking at her library like that. It was that damned witch again. She didn't bother moving from her seat. Marisa would come to her. Always did. This time was no exception.
“'Sup?” The word stung like a needle in her ear. Cursed rat, always stealing books. Patchy didn't even look up from her book as she answered the inevitable question before it was asked.
“No, you may NOT borrow any books from my library until you return the ones you've already taken.”
“But I'm not-” Marisa started to protest.
“Not done with them. You've done this excuse before. Why hasn't the cat stopped you...?” Patchy always referred to the guard and head maid of the mansion as 'cats' to go along with the rat analogy she stuck with these sort of intruders.
“Oh, come on. You have so many books already, just a few more gone wouldn't hurt.”
“Does not matter. Either you return the other books or I will drive the rat out myself.”
She didn't wait for an answer. She knew the rat would just try to make excuses again. She turned a few pages in the grimoire open on her desk, quickly reciting a spell. Hopefully this time she would catch the rat by surprise, drive it off before it made off with more books...
Or her asthma could act up again from the dust kicked up from her movement. She gasped for breath suddenly, spell fizzling out in front of her as she fell to her knees trying to reach for the nearby medicine to relieve her symptoms. Marisa just turned around ans walked off.
“Okay. I'll just take what I want and be on my way.”
Questions?: What's the 50th derivative of sin(5x)? (Don't answer if you don't want to. I just like watching people snap under math problems)
Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: Something tells me you wouldn't be even reading the app if I didn't, so yeah. If you're reading this, I probably did.
