Here's a subject that I've been trolled incessantly by (and have counter-trolled, I admit) ever since the first Sasuke and Sai arc (chapters 282-310 in the manga, episodes 33-53 holy shit that's a lot in the anime) of Naruto Shippuden: why certain fans (including myself) are so unfailingly faithful to Sasuke when he clearly is a massive penis

He's an arrogant prick, and he gives no fuck to his haters, he doesn't care about being likeable. He's cool, Naruto concurs. Naruto doesn't care about the opinion of Sasuke's critics either.
He doesn't deserve Naruto's loyalty, but Naruto did nothing to deserve it when Sasuke saved him at the Haku fight either. Naruto and Sasuke don't get petty about what's deserving.
He "betrayed" his village. I don't see what's the big deal, he simply left the place. And facepalm at people who think "death penalty for leaving your country" is morally right, I swear Konoha is like North Korea.
I also like the fact his character is written with more realism than others. When you're filled with hatred, you'd want to kill the people who'd caused you pain. You don't conquer hatred by beating your evil clone behind a waterfall, sorry Naru, Kishimoto writes your story like fairy tale.
His character isn't sugarcoated, when he wanted to kill all Konoha, he's rightly portrayed as insane, unlike Itachi, a mass murderer portrayed as a tragic hero. And shame on Kishimoto for using retarded patriotism to justify genocide.
And no, I don't think Kishimoto hasn't taken his character too far, people fall from grace sometimes, it happens in real life. I'm bored of the usual "arrogant cold hearted smartass turning soft after making friends" development trajectory for deutrantagonists.

And yes, Naruto's 'evil side' left me reeling, because wtf? That is not how life works, you don't make your problems manifest themselves into a sort of spiderman-in-a-dark-suit scenario and then beat the shit out of them. And on the subject of Itachi's irrationally extremist patriotism and really, the way he's always ready to screw his loved ones over for the 'greater good': FUCK YOU KISHI. And a fuck you to the Itachi fangirls, because Sasuke isn't perfect but at least he's human, and not some perfect crucified hero shedding tears of blood for his brother's sins from afar.
Sasuke hasn't turned soft, nor has he shown any signs of doing so in the foreseeable future. For me, that's infinitely preferable to him turning, as you said, to a cliche of a deuteragonist and faithfully backing Naruto up in fights while being cool about it. Keep him unpredictable and volatile, is what I say.

LOL. That made me laugh.

Agree. Agree to most everything you said.
