Sometimes I really dislike how, in this silly world, when in a group of people, you always have to be knowledgeable about modern media culture to be able to have a conversation. You have to know and watch what's on tv, the most popular movie of the week, the current music fads, etc etc. And if you don't know, and have that blank stare (e.g. you are me), you really have no hope of ever truly integrating with that crowd.
In some ways I appreciate the way media culture allows very different people to have a common point to talk about. It means people will get to know people they wouldn't usually know maybe. But it really does seem to be overly important. Admittedly this was much moreso in high school and is the main reason I never had very close friends. I've never been overly bothered about watching tv, listening to the radio or going to movies. I enjoy all of these, I love music, movies are great - I just never saw the point of spending excessive amounts of time to watch an entire series obsessively, or actually finding out which band plays that song (or the title of the song) and then finding their other music, or finding out the names of the star of that movie so I can find out info on said star and then watch other things they are in.
Yes, I'm lazy. But I honestly don't think I missed out much in my youth. Instead of watching tv, I'd be reading, or doing handstands, or at sports training of some kind, or playing an instrument, or making things, and so on. Unfortunately for me, I took a year off after high school and suddenly found myself with an insane amount of free time, knowing nobody (I went to the other side of the world for a year), having no sports team to train with, having no instruments with me, and having access to cable tv and being sent burnt dvds of the most popular tv series.
I managed to effectively melt my mind into sludge in one short year. And I'm still too lazy to go to movies or watch tv or find out who sings that song I love, the title of which I still don't know. And I still stare blankly when people are talking about tv shows and such because I still hang around people who don't watch the same things I do. But that's my fault - I'm too impatient for Australia to air things to watch, so I get them as they're released overseas, putting -me- suddenly in a position of knowledge of the newest coolest shows... but with no one else watching them yet.
