Bret needs a night-light...

All I want is to be left alone, in my average home
But why do I always feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone?
Somebody’s Watching Me - Rockwell

Sometimes, late at night, he would feel like someone was there.

Well, of course there was always someone there. Jemaine was always there because he lived in the flat, too. And they shared a room, so at night, they would both be in the bedroom - on their separate beds. So of course Bret could sense someone there, Jemaine was there.

But sometimes it seemed like there was someone else there, too. Another person, just in the room with them. It went on for a while before Bret decided to bring it up to his roommate and best friend.

“Hey, Jemaine?”

“Yeah, Bret?”

“Did you ever feel like there was someone else in the flat?”

“Yes. You’re in the flat, and I’m in the flat.”

“No, I mean… Besides us. While we’re sleeping.”

“Why would I feel like there was someone else was there if I was sleeping? I’d be asleep. I wouldn’t be awake to feel like anyone was there.”

“You never felt like someone was there, watching you sleep?”

“No. …Are you saying you watch me while I sleep? ‘Cause, that’d be a bit gay. If you watched me while I was sleeping.”

“No, I don’t watch you sleep. I’m saying that I think someone is coming into the flat and watching the both of us sleep.”

“Oh. No. No, I don’t think that someone’s breaking in and watching us sleep. It’s probably just you imagining David Bowie being there again.”

“Right. I guess you’re right…”

“Of course I am. Now let’s get back to practicing. We have a gig next week.”

Bret still felt like there was something else there. Something not David Bowie. He knew the David Bowie-presence feeling. And this was definitely not it. He felt trapped and anxious. It had a… sinister feel to it. Like what ever it was could attack him at any moment.

Just when he’d been beginning to feel like it was just all in his head, he saw a shadow escape through the door just as he rolled over. And ever since then, Bret’s kept a night-light on in the room at all times.
