So, yesterday morning, I had a chance to interview one of my idols,
Black Francis/Frank Black for a second time. This time around it was a much better interview than last time. Not that the last time was bad, but this time he was super chatty and even though my usual interviews last about 10-15 minutes, I chatted with Black for well over half an hour. The best part was that while we were talking about everything from opera techniques to keep voices strong, being a husky lad, the music biz, his crazy website and everything in between, he was busy wrangling his kids. I now have one of my favourite singers on tape saying "Lucy, wanna watch Teletubbies?" If I ever get a cellphone, that might have to be one of my ringtones.
And even though I know it's far from the truth, this scene from loudQUIETloud is how I imagined him on the other end of the phone.
This whole interview couldn't have been more perfect timing either, as this weekend, myself and three pals are gearing up to do a
Wave of Mutilation show. About 11 years ago, we got together and whipped up a full set of Pixies material, right down to altering appearances to look the part. We've had the band on hold for the last few years, as the real Pixies have been back together. But now that they seem to be on hiatus again and all busy with other projects, we're dusting off the setlist for another go-around. It's also a birthday present for our Kim Deal, Melissa, because she said all she wanted for her 40th birthday was to jam with the other three of us. I went one better and planned a show. And even though I'm not quite there yet, here's what I'll look like tomorrow night sans hair and beard. More photos forthcoming.
So, if you happen to be in Victoria tomorrow night, c'mon by the show! 9pm at Logan's Pub, 1821 Cook Street.
