There he was. John Sheppard had finally tracked Rodney McKay to one of the more remote labs which he used when he wanted to hide from his scientists or as he called them “incredibly stupid morons”. Sheppard smirked as he wandered up to the oblivious scientist.
“Hey Rodney. What’re you doing?”
McKay jumped and quickly covered his lap top, hiding the screen. “Nothing. I was just... nothing!”
Now this was interesting. Anything that made Rodney turn that shade of red was something he needed to know about.
“Rodney.”
“Look it’s nothing you’d be interested in.”
“Give it up Rodney.”
Sheppard grinned as he leaned against the lab table, arms folded and an eyebrow raised. Rodney could never keep a secret from him. He mentally counted off the seconds... Five, four, three...”
McKay shot him a long-suffering glare and gave in to the inevitable. “Look, you know how the IOA wanted to prepare for de-classification.”
“Yeah. That’s why they released that docu-drama thing that everyone thinks is a sci-fi series. To prepare the nation, or whatever. You’re not watching episodes online again are you? You took that way too seriously. “
“You’re one to talk. How many hair stylists does one man need on set? Though, in your case they were more like animal tamers. Anyway that’s not the issue.”
Sheppard fought the sudden urge to check his hair. “What is the issue?”
The words exploded in a sudden rush. “We’re all over the internet! Seriously, there are people all over the world writing stories about us and posting art. I found this one site by this amazing author, Kiera Marcos. She’s got huge numbers of obsessive fans and, well... I was just curious.” Rodney was flustered and looked equally embarrassed and earnest.
“We have fan fiction? Cool. C’mon let me see this site.”
Rodney kept a possessive arm round the laptop. “Don’t you have a mission to prepare for? Wait, I’m sure Ronon was looking for you... isn’t it time for your run?”
Sheppard abandoned his slouch and stepped forward. “McKay.”
Rodney hesitated then drew himself up decisively, handing the laptop over. “Ok, ok, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
McKay busied himself at his lab bench, deliberately not staring at John who was avidly going through Rodney’s saved and favourite web sites. McKay reminded himself to breathe as he waited for a reaction to the content. He’d never noticed how small and airless this lab was. He could swear his throat was getting tighter. This lab was below the kitchens. Could some citrus have gotten through the air vents? His consideration of a probable plan by disgruntled Kitchen servers to poison him with lemons was interrupted by Sheppard clearing his throat loudly...
“Rodney. Is this slash fiction?”
“Yes.”
“About us?”
“Yes.”
“You and me?”
Rodney snorted. “Sheppard, I know you have some brain cells somewhere. Try to use at least one. Yes, this is slash fiction. Big Gay Slash Fiction about you and me, having sex... together. These authors have very vivid imaginations...”
“They really do.” Sheppard continued his search through the sites. “What’s that picture? Is that us?”
Rodney was thrown by Sheppard’s non-reaction. This was not how he had imagined the conversation going. He hadn’t really thought past expecting John to be shocked/horrified/nauseous and to make a quick escape.
“Ah, that’s some Art work. People take images and manipulate them to create banners and icons. That one is by an artist called fanarts_series. There’s a link to her site. She’s really very talented and creative. It’s not about sex really, it’s art. I mean there’s some nudity obviously but it’s only when needed and...”
Sheppard grinned. “Rodney, you’re babbling.” He gestured at the screen. “She is creative... Is that one anatomically possible?”
“How would I know? The “McKay” in the fan fiction is getting way more sex than I am.”
Rodney huffed out a sigh as he considered the sorry state of his real life compared to the rampant amounts of adventurous sex his counterpart seemed to be getting in every story he’d read. At least before his break up with Keller he was getting some sex, even if it was strictly vanilla.
“That doesn’t seem fair. Maybe I could help?”
Sheppard’s soft tone penetrated Rodney’s brooding thoughts.
“No it isn’t fair. You’d think... Wait, what?” Rodney gaped in disbelief. He could not have heard Sheppard ask that.
John stood up and stretched languidly, all the while studying Rodney with intensely green eyes. “Well we do have our own slash fiction Rodney. I think the universe is trying to tell us something.”
Rodney fought to look away John’s eyes. Had they always had that much green in the hazel? He struggled to keep up with Sheppard’s insane argument. “The universe wants us to have sex?”
Sheppard shrugged indifferently. “Well, the universe or a huge amount of women on the internet. And do we want to let these women down, seriously?” His voice was suddenly lower, intimate and sensual as he stepped closer.
Rodney held his ground, despite the temptation to back up or pinch himself because this could not be his reality. Maybe some sort of ancient device had sucked him into those stories. Sheppard’s gaze was expectant...
“No we don’t. I mean, some of them are scary. I guess we could have sex for their sake.”
“I’m so glad you’re willing to make the sacrifice Rodney.”
“It’s not a sacrifice. More... an experiment. Yes. We owe it to science.” He could totally stay calm. He was a scientist. This was an experiment. Absolutely normal. Not a world-turning-upside-down, life changing choice at all. Breathe Rodney, he ordered himself. Seriously there must be some citrus in this room...
John stepped forward into his space. Meeting Rodney’s eyes he reached out to stroke his cheek then curled a hand round his back and pulled him into a kiss. It was light, hesitant and somehow better than any kiss Rodney had ever experienced. Rodney sighed with relief, allowing the tension to drain out of his body. He opened his mouth and Sheppard took immediate advantage. The soft, sweet kiss deepened rapidly into a passionate possessive embrace which left Rodney breathless, flushed and aroused.
Sheppard broke the kiss and stared silently into Rodney’s blue eyes. Seemingly satisfied by what he saw there, he smiled. “Maybe we should move this to my room?”
Rodney nodded, not confident that he could string together a coherent sentence yet.
The intimate smile was replaced by a mischievous grin. “Bring the laptop. I’m thinking we should try to recreate that banner by fanarts_series.”
Rodney almost tripped over in his enthusiasm. “Laptop? Yes... Great!”
