'Downton Abbey' Season 2, Episode 2

Oct 02, 2011 18:02

Another year on: Carson seems to be doing everything; Robert has a new valet (:() who has seen action in the trenches; William's papers finally come through and requests that Daisy have a photo taken for his journey (♥).

- Robert: "So both my footmen have gone to the war while I cut ribbons and make speeches."

Mrs Patmore's nephew goes missing in action but Robert offers to have a look into the matter; Molesley works up the courage to ask Anna out (noooooooo!); Lang prepares to help Carson as both valet and footman; Edith tries her hand at driving tractors and Thomas returns, though not welcomed by everyone, being snubbed by both Carson and Mrs Hughes (ha!) and told off by Daisy.

- Thomas: "Where's Mr Bates?"
O'Brien: "Gone. Replaced by Mr Lang."
Thomas: "So not all the changes were bad."
(Anna throws a glance in Thomas's direction)
Little shit... >:O

- Mary: (on Sir Richard) "He's nice, isn't he?"
Rosamund: "To be honest he spent the entire journey reading his own papers, but I'm sure I'll love him dearly if he ever looks up from a page..."

Mrs Hughes: "A broken heart can be as painful as a broken limb."
Anna: "Don't feel sorry for me Mrs Hughes, I'm not. I know what real love is and there aren't many who can say that. I'm one of the lucky ones."
:3

Mary's new beau Richard Carlisle leaves everyone wondering what she sees in him; Lang struggles trying to help Carson serving dinner, with Carson suffering a panic attack (shame on you Edith being more concerned about your dress than your poor butler!); O'Brien reaches out to Lang, recognising his symptoms as one suffering from shell shock as her favourite brother experienced the same.

Carson: (on Matthew) "May I give you one piece of advice, m'lady? Tell him what's in your heart; if you still love him, let him know, and even if he's killed, and he may be, you won't be sorry. If you don't tell him you could regret it all your life long."
Mary: "And what about Miss Swire?"
Carson: "Miss Swire, as if any man in his right mind could prefer Miss Swire to you!"
(She smiles)

Rosamund, Violet, Cora and Robert worry that Mary will be mismatched with Sir Richard; Rosamund catches Lavinia and Sir Richard in an uncomfortable position; Sybil and Thomas attempt to help a soldier blinded by mustard gas, only to be told he will have to be moved as there is a shortage of beds.

- Violet: "I'm not a romantic..."
Rosamund: "I should hope not."
Violet: "...but even I can concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose of pumping blood."

- Mrs Hughes: "The world does not turn on the style of a dinner."
Carson: "My world does!"

Thomas and Sybil's patient commits suicide during the night, Dr Clarkson suspecting he slashed his wrists with a smuggled in razor, giving Sybil the idea to turn Downton into somewhere the wounded can have time to recover; Sir Richard proposes to Mary, though the proposal seems to be only to make them a powerhouse couple; Mary comforts Lavinia; Anna lets Molesley down gently; John Drake and Edith Robert get a little intimate; Robert has bad news for Mrs Patmore: her nephew has been shot dead for desertion. Violet is against the idea of Downton becoming a convalescent home but is quickly reminded by Cora that Downton is no longer her home and will become just that; Matthew keeps Robert informed on how things are in the trenches; Daisy thinks she's led William on but is advised by Mrs Patmore to keep up appearances as, given that her nephew is dead, she doesn't want William going to the Front a broken man.

Mary: "Did you love Bates more than anyone else in the world?"
Anna: (nodding) "I did. I do. I'll never love again like I love him. Ever."
Mary: "Well there you are then. One day you'll meet someone else and you'll marry. Perhaps it'll be second best but it doesn't mean you can't have a life."
Anna: "I think it does, to me."
:(

- Edith discovers her services are no longer required by the Drakes, Mrs Drake having caught her and her husband in a passionate clinch from a distance (tut tut Edith); she does not welcome the news.
