'Downton Abbey', Episode 2

Nov 17, 2010 01:27

Matthew and Isobel arrive at their new home in the nearby village. Matthew is uncomfortable with the new way of life but his mother feels that they should avoid satisfying the Crawley's assumptions about their behaviour. Matthew ridicules the prospect of marrying one of the Crawley daughters when Mary suddenly appears with an invitation to dinner that evening. Violet is openly hostile towards Isobel as is Mary towards Matthew. Matthew astonishes Violet when he declares his intention to continue working as a solicitor. Isobel too is determined to hold her own against Violet and as she trained as a nurse during the Anglo-Boer War, occupies herself with the local hospital.

William: (about Matthew) "Are we to treat him as the heir?"
O'Brien: "Are we heck as like! A doctor's son from Manchester? He'll be lucky if he gets a civil word out of me!"
Anna: "We're all lucky if we get a civil word out of you!"

- Cora: (on Matthew and his mother Isobel) "So what are they like?"
Mary: "She's nice enough but he seems full of himself."
Cora: "Why do you say that?"
Mary: "Just an impression."

- Isobel Crawley: "What shall we call each other?"
Violet Crawley: "Well we can always start with Mrs Crawley and Lady Grantham."
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaawkward. :/

- Violet: (as Matthew announces his intentions to hold down a job and still express interest in the running of Downton at the weekends) "What is a weekend?"
LMFAO!

Anna & Gwen gossip. :D

O'Brien putting her foot in it hahah. :P

Daisy looks very comfortable with Thomas... ;)

Bates: "Alone at last."
<33333333

- Sybil sticking up for Bates = ♥♥♥

Carson becomes annoyed over a letter and Anna catches him stealing food; he is being blackmailed by his former stage show partner Charles Grigg, now a petty thief, to whom he was providing food and lodging as he hid from the law. However, only Bates, Anna, Sybil Crawley and Robert are aware of this so there is no fear of exposure. Robert is amused by Carson's background however and pays off Grigg, but when Grigg gets nasty, Robert threatens to turn him over to the police if he returns.
(LMFAO at the thought of Carson being in a double act and go Robert! \o/)

- Carson: "I take it my resignation has not been accepted?"
Robert: "My dear fellow, we all have chapters we would rather keep unpublished. To be honest Carson, I'm rather impressed. Did you really sing and dance and everything in front of an audience?"
Carson: "I did."
Robert: "Do you ever miss it?"
Carson: "Not in the least, my lord."

Lots of these two this episode makes, me v. happy. :D ♥

- Isobel 1 Violet 0

- Robert: (seeing Matthew off) "We all have different parts to play Matthew, and we must all be allowed to play them."

- Tension flares between Isobel Crawley and Violet when Isobel pressures the local doctor Clarkson into performing a new procedure (pericardiocentesis) on a hospital patient suffering from dropsy. After a tip-off from Cora, Violet makes her way to the hospital intent on stopping Isobel however the treatment proves successful and Robert appoints Isobel chairwoman of the hospital board, much to the disappointment of his mother...

Carson: "At times I wonder if I'm just a sad old fool."
Aaaaaaaw. :(
