Hey, all!
Well, I'm back. I'm still not up to reading my flist - just NO time right now. But I hope y'all are reading the
spn_summergen stuff, because there's some great wee! and teen!chester fic in the submissions posted so far.
In particular, though, so far, I've read a few already and I have to recommend
How I Learned to Ride a Bike and also
I Dunno Third Base. The first is an account of Sam teaching himself to ride, and it's described so evocatively that it will take you back to that time in your own lives when you first tried to control a two-wheeler. The second is a beautiful take on an hunt in which John is concussed and wakes with amnesia. The subtle and understated arc of all three Winchester men is simply staggering. This fic strikes at the heart of each of their deepest fears, and you will ache for each of them as they struggle with each other and with their own degrees of desire and despair.
There are quite a few others that I've read or I'm reading through, but these two are the standouts in the first 8 or so involving pre-series eras. I'll try to do a special Summergen edition of the FicRec when posting is done.
There were also a LOT of
spn_j2_bigbang submissions this year that had to do with Wee!Chesters. Alas, I have not had time to read them all yet, but I am committed to doing so. One that I can recommend (and it's been recommended elsewhere, too) is the very charming
The Taming of the You-Know-Who by
innie-darling, a subtle AU with a lot of wit and a twist that you think you've predicted, but really you haven't. It features playa!Sam, oblivious!John, and Ballroom Dancing. No, really.
Lastly, here's a cute little Foodie!Dean fic for you:
Red Beans and RiceAuthor: Emily Brunson (

I love the idea of Dean as a closet foodie, given all the Ronco commercials and late-night cable TV he must watch in those hotel rooms (and not all pr0n, all the time). The storytelling style here is sparse and yet carries an undercurrent of the subtle ways in which Dean takes care of the family by turning Mom to both Sam *and* John.
I think I'm developing a parentalization kink (no, not in a pr0ny way, get your heads out of the gutter). Oh, dear.....
