With the BM dresses from David's Bridal, if they don't want to pay in full, the bridesmaids have to pay half when they order it, and the other half at pick-up.
Wear ACTUAL underpants. No thongs. I didn't know I'd be trying on dresses when I went, and needless to say I wish my cheeks had been covered. LOL Wear a strapless bra. Seriously. If you have a longline strapless bra, even better, but it's not necessary. They might offer to put you in a longline bra for trying on dresses because it can make a difference with many gowns, but if you're not comfortable with that, you're allowed to say no. I used to work at a bridal shop, and all the longline strapless bras for customers to use for trying on gowns were communal. We had bins and bins of them, in every size, but once a girl was done trying on gowns, it went right back into the bin for the next girl of that particular size. They will have petticoats of course, so no worries about those.
If you already have some idea about whether you'll wear your hair up or down, wear it that way to try on gowns. Makes it easier to visualize. If you're like me, you'll want to at least put on mascara. Naked face makes it hard for me to, again, see the whole picture.
That said, don't slather on foundation either. Staining a bridal gown because you look like an Oompa Loompa is just NOT okay. ;)
If you think you'll wear heels on your wedding day, and you have a pair that are a height you like, then bring those along. They don't have to match the gown, but it'll give you an idea as to how much hemming you might need, how unruly the dress is or isn't, or whether you end up saying "screw this" and wearing flats!
And lastly, don't be afraid to try on something that you're not so sure about. Often it's the ones you overlook that end up being absolutely perfect!
Sorry about any typos, I am heading out the door and don't care to take the time to proofread. :D
Yes, the bridal shop attendant would be putting you in the gowns. Wedding gowns are meant to go on over the head, as it's less stress on the gowns, especially since the ones in the store are tried on over and over again, so they need to be as gentle on the dresses as they can, so that they hold up for as long as possible. Not to mention, most gowns are "larger" than you think, with many layers and they can be difficult to maneuver. Some gowns zip up, but many are laced up, so you'd require help with that. Also, if a gown isn't exactly your size, it would be clipped in the back, so that you can see what it would actually look like on you as best as possible.
