We asked a friend who is ordained, but each state varies in terms of requirements for what one needs to do to perform marriages, so that can give you a starting point. I don't think 6 months out is bad, though.
we found ours in one of those huge bridal books. She is like thirty and it said in her ad that she specialsied in the nn relgious, we have met her a couple of times and we are so happy to have chosen her.
We had a coworker of mine who was going to do it, but that didn't work because of her other job (her actual job)...so I actually asked my venue if they had any recommendations for a non-religiously affiliated officiant. They were the ones who pointed me in the direction of the woman we wound up with...I just booked her at the beginning of this month and my wedding is the end of April. My guess is that you'll want to start talking with them now because summer is a busy time...
While looking for mine I used my pal Google. As in regards to the time frame, I could not tell you as we booked our well in advance. Hope you find the Officiant for you.
We're either having one of my former co-workers officiate for us (she's Heathen, but is ordained and specializes in non-religious ceremonies), or we'll ask a friend to get ordained. Not sure who yet.
