Mine weren't super matchy matchy but they did kind of tie together. Both used our primary wedding color (sage green) and had a similar kind of whimsical vine/swirl design that became the accidental theme of our wedding.
I don't think there's a hard and fast "rule" for this, but for me it just kind of happened accidently because the things that I ended up liking were similar and matched the idea I had in my head of what I wanted my wedding to feel like.
For the StDs I ordered from WeddingPaperDivas.com:
I made my own invites using pocket folds from Cards and Pockets and a gorgeous swirly rubber stamp...

So the font is similar, the colors match and they're both swirly... ::shrug:: I guess they do kind of match, lol.
Like the above poster said, do what you want! No one is going to notice or judge you on either choice.
