hallelujah moment

I was at a local discount store last week, and I found the perfect idea for centerpieces. Centerpieces have been the bane of my wedding plans, because I had NO FREAKING CLUE what I was going to have. But this, this is perfect.

I have known from the beginning that I wanted cupcakes, and I also knew that I was probably going to make them myself. I have a fair amount of skill at decorating them, and plenty of time to perfect my technique, so why not?

I found stacks of these cupcake stands by Wilton marked down from $10 to $5.99! So I scooped up 4 of them to start with. The gears were turning. I was thinking about having them all up on a cake table or something, but then my dad suggested to have one at each table as a centerpiece. YES.

It holds 13, but the top layer just holds one, so I am probably going to just put the table number and holder there rather than a cupcake. Once I decided that this was for sure what I wanted (and FH agreed), I went back to the store yesterday to get some more. There weren't any in the spot they had been before. Crap crap crap. I panicked and scoured every aisle before finally finding them tucked into some weird corner, and marked down again to $4.99. So I grabbed 6 more, and I'm thinking that that will be enough for our reception (about 75 people, 8 people to a table). Last night, I made a batch of cupcakes so that I could work on my decorating. I think they turned out well, but I bought a tub of icing rather than making my own, so I stopped doing the swirls after the first few because I didn't have enough icing. Hence the funny bottom layer :P And they won't be green. I'm thinking that I'm going to have 3 flavors, and each flavor will have a different icing color (white, pink, and turquoise). I think I did ok on the icing, but I will definitely have to practice a few more times before it's time for the real thing, because it's still a little sloppy and I didn't get the icing right to the very edge like I should have.

As for making them all myself, I am thinking that's what my bridal party is for :] On the day before the wedding, I'm going to wrangle my MOH/little sister and as many willing bridesmaids as I can and have a cupcake baking/decorating party. The girls who are more comfortable with baking can bake, and the girls who are good at doing icing swirls can help me with that part. It should be pretty manageable (I say this now... haha)

centerpieces, cake: alternatives, do it yourself, cake
