I'm pretty savvy when it comes to making things myself. Most of the wishing trees I've seen are like this:

They have bought branches, either real or fake, and arranged them in vases containing sea glass, marbles, ect. that hold the branches in place. I'm going to do a test run of this well before my wedding. I plan on buying two or three hurricane vases, filling them with polished green glass, and arranging gold tinted branches in them untill I'm satisfied. I'm also going to hang a few votives from the branches and tie some orchid blossoms to the branches as well. On the table, I'm going to provide leaf shaped cards in various hues of mossy greens, ribbon, gold pens, and instructions so that guests who have never seen a wishing tree before know what to do.

I don't know how far out your wedding is, but when I get back from training in August I'm going to post journals on all my DIY experiments before the big day. :) The wishing tree is the first one I'll do because I'm so excited about it!
