I know I've read at least once of people having a small, private wedding (for various reasons) and then a larger one later.
Ladies, your thoughts on this?
My fiancé and I are both military so there is definitely a benefit (both financial and as far as us being stationed together) to us getting married sooner rather than later. Moreover, our parents likely will not be helping at all as far as defraying the cost and we, quite frankly, can't afford the wedding we want right now. So... this leaves us with the option of waiting or eloping, more or less. We've talked about having a chaplain friend (who is not Catholic, though we are) marry us and then doing a weekend get away. We've talked about taking a short cruise and having the ship's captain marry us. My concern is this: I really want to share the occasion with family and friends. REALLY REALLY. I'm afraid that if we go ahead with the first wedding that when it comes time for the second it will feel like a formality and that I will regret it.
(This would, of course, be us.)
TIA for your insight!
