Her name is May "Mayday" Parker, and in her world, she's the daughter of Spider-Man. She used to be known as Spider-Girl but she put up the webs after what happened to her Uncle Phil.
Anyway, May had finals today. Which would have been bad enough on its own, but oh no, the Black Tarantula just had to kidnap her baby brother. So there she was, doing that thing she swore she'd never do again -- the hero thing. It's not like she had a choice.
"I'm not excited," she told herself. "Only a sicko would be excited that a crime-lord stole her baby brother."
It was amazing how well the suit fit. Even with her hair grown out way too long for crime fighting -- didn't she make fun of Felicity for that once? -- and even with the freshman fifteen, it looked like she'd never stopped. That was...cool.
"Was this how Uncle Phil felt," she wondered, "when he went back in business?"
Not that she was excited, of course. No way. She was scared out of her mind. Terrified at the thought that she'd screw up again. With every punch thrown, every jab dodged, and every stupid remark she remembered it.
Phil had been so happy when he called her. He said he'd found the last piece of the puzzle. It had taken the two of them almost two years, but now they could lock Kingsley away. He wouldn't slip away this time. Now they knew he'd never do what he did to the others -- the Ladyhawks, Buzz, and Raptor -- ever again.
She'd gone down to the warehouse to meet him. Then, BOOM. Phil Urich was dead. Kingsley didn't even stay to watch the fireworks. But she sensed him. Seconds too late for the Green Goblin, for the person to trust Spider-Girl, she could sense his killer. Sense, but never see. Never again.
That's why she followed the Black Tarantula even after she knew the Buzz had taken off with Benjy. That's why she trailed him around half of New York even while her spider-sense tingled so hard it made her dizzy. That's why she didn't notice the portal until it was too late.
