Composting

I have no idea why in the world we need a compost heap. I will say this, having started one, the amount of trash we put out has gone down. Plus, Pittsburgh just recently implemented a single stream recycling effort which I'm very much looking forward to finally just being able to cram all the recycables into one bag.

It's amazing how much trash a family of 4 ½ (dog included) generates.

Anyway, we have a small compost bin in the back yard and I've been flipping/tossing/turning it just about every week. I'm impressed with how fast it is decomposing and how much rich black dirt it has created already. I have no idea what we're going to do with it come summer, but I guess we'll figure something out. We have a blueberry bush we can add some of it too. Our house is far from green, but we're starting somewhere. Now if only I can get everyone to turn off lights when they're no longer in the room. Not sure why it's a difficult concept. :P I may purchase some lighting controls from smarthome.com someday.

personal, being green
