maddie
today i met the cutest girl ever. madelaine, a one year old australian shepherd. poor thing is blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, and has a non-contagious form of mange. apparently when they found her at our sister shelter in texas, she was so covered in scabs that she just bled all over the workers when they tried to wash her. she is getting better though in her foster home. she has a pink nose and pink skin with mostly white fur so she looks like a piggy. it's adorable. she is also the sweetest dog i have met (although grizzly, another dog i handled today, was damn sweet too) and very happy and curious about the world. and for an aussie she is pretty chill.
she had a couple people look at her closely today. i'm not sure if it will result in any applications. but i am thinking about adopting her. it's a big step. i'm getting my mom's spare crate and baby gate this weekend. it's just such a leap to get a dog. it makes it hard to go out. it makes it hard to go on trips. but when it comes to my day to day life, i think i could really benefit from having a canine companion. maddie is so darn sweet though. i don't know if i could ever go anywhere without her! maddie and laddie!! oh my god, that's adorable. except i think laddie would be a real ass to her. she doesn't read signals that well being half blind and deaf, so some dogs snap at her.
today was really stressful in general. early on, one of the dogs (dakota) snapped and bit a ten year old girl. he's normally really nice, so we're not sure what happened. she cried a lot and has to get a tetanus shot. i just hope the family is understanding. you can never tell what is going to freak a dog out. and the adoption events are so busy and hectic. some people let their damn stupid kids, including toddlers, just walk up and start poking the dogs. it's really nerve racking because you just sit there holding your breath praying that the dog isn't going to snap. also, four volunteers canceled so all of us were handling two or three dogs at one time. i'm completely wiped out and have a massive headache. we basically played "musical dogs" all day, so i handled pancho, grizzly, tina lou, maddie, tirby, tyson, jenny, and pie. exhausting. and now i can't go to bed until this damn virus scanner finishes. how effing long can it take????
