What's In A Friend?

I was wondering about the implied relationship of the "Friends" connection in LJ.

That is, not like you know user I.D.'s as individuals (unless you DO, but that's not often in the general LJ population) when you forge this "Friends" addition.

I've added some, removed them after becoming more familiar afterward for a variety of reasons, but, with some people, by removing them they become very upset, some even hypercritical or even vindictive afterward -- and these weren't people I "knew" beyond the LJ setting, interacting a while, nothing beyond that.

What are opinions about this, experiences, other than my own, where the "Friends" connection in LJ is concerned? Is it best to stop all communication with someone about whom you feel a twinge of discomfort, or worse? Or, no connection?
