This week on my webcomic, one of the minor characters does a spell to create fire. He's done it before, on a
page I did about a year ago. Back then, my webcomic creation tools were limited to the gimp. Now I've got a whole pantheon of tools: gims, Illustrator and Painter Essentials 4. I'm rather impressed with Painter Essentials (it came with my Bamboo Fun) and one of these days I hope to upgrade to the latest version (Painter X last time I checked, but maybe it's stepped a version already.)
Anyway, I want to talk about how I did the flames. I really like the effect that I got.
Especially compared with a year ago, which was created in the gimp, with a round brush set to about 35% transparency.
The top one: In Painter, I created a layer with purple paint for the flames, then put the blending mode to Divide. Viola!
How do you create flames?
