Day 3: Removing inside padding and more sanding

Jun 17, 2020 23:18

On day three I decided to take all the padding out off the inside walls. G had taken two panesl off (one off each jockey doro) and it was clear that there was rust hiding under these as well. These original pads are brown vinyl over foam sheets on top of press-wood backing boards. Not super fancy but effective. Which is great, because I will be making new ones with a similar construction. I've done some research and it looks like marine-grade upholstery material will be the best choice. While this is a easy, fun re-upholstery project, I've decided to wait on this particular project until I have fully committed to the color and style of the new paint.

At least I know where they will go

I also did more sanding.and polishing - no surprise there. Except the dent hiding under the front corner diamond plate and the rust that had accumulated around it and the crease where the front of the trailer joins the tongue. So this day I was working on this area too. It went rather smoothly. I think this day required more experimenting with wire brushes and my palm sander as I tried to get close to the crease and the rust hiding in that weird space. I had a goal to complete the prep & primer sessions one 1/4 at a time. So far it was going fairly well. This day I ran out of oomph and only got 1/2 the area sanded down but not rust treated I hadn't quite addressed the section of the jockey door / tack door. I wanted to do this in a right to left progression but sometimes the time when I was able to arrive, the day's temperature, or just the nature of that day's task seemed to sway the day too. Okay. I can roll with that - as long as we are making progress. I admit that doing this work was so satisfying that I used a vacation day mid-week just to work on it. I considered it physical and mental therapy
