Running Hard

The idea of sleep is nice, but there's too much in her head to succumb to it, no matter how tempting the bed or the partner in it with her.

She can feel the demon under her skin, the one she met in the shadow of the Iron watchtower. It is all silken laughter, and it tells her, "This is what happens when you do not rule your emotions, foolish little girl."

She tries to banish it with the sound of her feet on the sand, the smell of the sea, the darkness of the shore. She runs until she cannot run anymore.

The demon whispers in their voices.

"The real answer is that I want to be true to you. I want it to be you and me. And maybe whoever we mutually decide to seduce into bed with us. But until the day you're ready to make that choice, I'm not going to be sitting idle and hoping."

"It's because, as difficult as it is for me to admit it, much less say it out loud... I do love you. Enough to let you go public with me. Enough to marry you if that is what you wanted."

The demon is laughing as it whispers, and she cannot outrun it.

And this time, she does not know how to turn and face it.
