After finding out last night about the disability website giving out some peoples full names when they replied to posts in emailed notifications, the Admin there have sorted it out ASAP. They had no idea that was happening and now all notifications merely state that there's been another reply to the thread. I've been on there since 2001 and they are the best, leading disability website for news, advice on all issues affected and with expert advice on the mine field that is dis benefits.
When you sign up you're supposed to give your real name and postcode because if you buy dis equipment from them you get a discount, so to qualify you must give that info. Since I have bought from them then I needed to give my real name although my user name is only ever shown on the forums, hence my reason for being so shocked at this potentially dangerous screwup. When you're long term ill or disabled you feel vulnerable, if you live alone then perhaps more so. I guard my private details as carefully as I can but anyone could have tracked my user name having been given my full name and via the web info given out, county etc pretty soon traced me to a location and/or real address, my name is unusual which makes it even easier. Paranoia? I was stalked online for 2 years by an ex who refused to give up. I also have used the net to trace to an actual home address of someone who thought they were being very clever when trying to damage the website. With the advent of multiple phone companies doing directory enquiries, mailing lists and the electoral register online for all to see we are not as hidden as we like to think. You can tick the electoral register to not show your details when you sign it which means that legitimate companies won't show it, but not everyone is above board. I'm glad I discovered what was going on, shame no-one else did though a long time before.
