okay eventually i'm going to STOP crossing over 'his dark materials' with my other favorite fandoms. but i still am. so, here's a 'yu-gi-oh! x his dark materials' crossover thing. yep. lots of thoughts.

yugi mutou: after some deciding: a female caracal. she only just recently settled -- possibly a source for a lot of teasing in school. she would act as yugi's protector of sorts. before she settled, she would often take the form of a large cat to scare off bullies. she's braver than yugi and resents the pharaoh and his own daemon for a long time, even though yugi is willing to trust him, especially after he nearly kills kaiba and yugi stops that duel back in season 1. perhaps she settled after yugi finished the puzzle? name: keeva -- irish, means gentle or kind.

yami yugi/the pharaoh/atem: a female peregrine falcon. rather proud, does not take to yugi as quickly as the pharaoh does. among the line of pharaohs, all their daemons settled into large cats, or large, over-sized birds, but atem's settled into a rather smaller bird and was, thus, a bit of a disappointment to his father when she finally settled. as the pharaoh learns to duel with more kindness and honor, so does she. like yami, she has no memories, nor does she know what her real name is. yami calls her his partner, similar to how he speaks to yugi, and she resents that for some time, until she begins to care more for yugi and accepts the nickname that he gives her. he calls her "ume" which means plum in japanese, because the dark tint of her feathers sometimes reflects a rich purple color, and because the plum blossom symbolizes devotion, reflecting her deep devotion and love for the spirit of the puzzle. her true name, which she and the pharaoh forgot, is nephthys.

seto kaiba: so tempted to give kaiba some kind of lizard daemon, but i don't really know. lizards are slow and so often non-responsive, that it just doesn't seem like a good fit for kaiba. i imagine kaiba having a rather un-showy kind of daemon, one that doesn't reflect his wealth, but rather his power and his ability to survive. i decided on a female golden jackal. named skadi. she attempts to try and keep kaiba's anger in check, but because of their connection, she is often the one most likely to fly off the handle, while kaiba attempts to remain calm. she is fiercely protective over mokuba and his daemon and he is the only other human allowed to touch her. she is also strangely enamored to both keeva and ume, and speaks highly of yugi/the pharaoh. she is aware of the difference, while kaiba believes that yugi's daemon still hasn't settled yet.

joey/jonouchi: okay so i can picture joey having something quick to anger, but also something that could cuddle and be very nurturing. i went with a male wolverine, because i think that a male daemon would suit joey better than a female one. the wolverine is small and doesn't look dangerous, but has a sharp bite and ferocious attitude. named remiel. remiel is fiercely protective over joey's friends and their daemons, particularly yugi's and serenity's. remiel tries to encourage joey's independence from yugi when it comes to dueling and is a major part of joey's insistence that yugi not help him when it comes to dueling later on. like joey and his friends, remiel notices the difference between yugi normally and when yugi is dueling, but connects it to the change in his daemon.

tea/anzu: a bird, colorful most definitely, and a songbird. i went with a male blue-winged leafbird. definitely very animated and affectionate, comforts the daemons of others, always has something encouraging to say. named puck. puck suspects long before the others that yugi's daemon has settled, despite the transition she makes into ume. puck is actually closest to tristan's daemon, but is quite fond of keeva. the two are very affectionate around one another. puck often forgets how small he is, but manages to do a lot of damage anyway. tea has most of her things put away because puck always manages to knock things over. similar to his affection for keeva, puck also is attracted to ume, but afraid of her, and the spirit of the puzzle, as well. puck finds the spirit to be intimidating, long before even yugi becomes aware of his presence. he mentions to tea during a battle that yugi seems so different, almost like another person, especially his daemon. puck swells with pride when they learn of the spirit residing in the puzzle.

tristan/honda: a genderqueer stoat, named circe. though he struggled with it at first, tristan is used to his daemon's rejection of gendered pronouns. he quickly, but kindly, corrects people who try to use female pronouns on hir. circe gives off the impression that ze's rather too cool for most of what ze considers to be "silly card games", but is extremely supportive of joey and remiel. circe, like puck, notices that yugi is different while dueling, but doesn't think that it's too important, and chalks it up to the fact that keeva still hasn't settled, which yugi hasn't even admitted to anyone yet, since keeva often remained in the form of a caracal even around friends. when it's revealed that keeva has settled and that ume is actually a different daemon entirely, circe is rather nonchalant about it and claims that ze already knew the whole time, much to tristan's embarrassment. circe maintains hir most comfortable relationships with remiel and duke devlin's daemon [name and animal not decided yet]

so like i discussed in the blurb about keeva, a lot of yugi's troubles in high school come from the fact that he is one of the few kids whose daemon hasn't settled yet -- until he puts the puzzle together. before that, keeva had retained the shape of a caracal because she used it to defend yugi against bullies, though she was still fairly small.

when yugi puts the puzzle together, keeva finally settles, though no one notices at first because keeva had hardly changed shape in front of others before. yugi never reveals this to his friends because he can't quite explain why keeva seems to vanish when he duels and is replaced by the spirit's daemon, who he calls "ume". yugi becomes aware of the spirit in duelist kingdom and understands, finally, that keeva has truly settled and that ume is the spirit's daemon.

when yugi duels, he and keeva retreat inward and are both aware of what is happening and can communicate with the spirit and ume. ume despises the nickname yugi gives her at first, but after the battle with pegasus, she insists that others, including the pharaoh, use the name, due to the great courage and sacrifice yugi displayed during the final battle. ume is particularly protective of keeva, though keeva resents this protection, but often finds herself relishing in ume's attention, though she does find both the spirit and his daemon to be rather intimidating at first.

ume allows yugi to touch her, which was just as great a taboo in the pharaoh's world as it is in yugi. conversely, keeva allows the pharaoh to touch her and, in season 4, when yugi's soul is trapped, a memory of keeva exists with the pharaoh's soul room, reminding him that she and yugi will be alright and that there is still good in the pharaoh's soul. well, i want to cry.
