Book Review #1: The Selection By: Kiera Cass

The first thing they caught me with this book was the Cover it was very pretty and eye catching. I can hear you say it now you can't judge a book by its cover and in this case its only partially right.
The second thing that caught me was the interesting premise. The book is about a girl named America Singer who is chosen by lottery to be 1 of 35 girls chosen to compete to marry the prince. Very Bachelor sounding right?
For the most part I enjoyed the novel there were a few things about it that didn't quite sit well with me and I'll go over those a bit later.

Characters:
America Singer: The first thing about America that I notice is her name its very weird kinda cliche sounding, and I almost didn't read the book because her name was America Singer. The next thing that I notice about her was how whinny she was she has a very Bella Swan feel to her especially in the beginning of the book with lines like this "Please don't call me gorgeous. First my mom, then May, now you. It's getting on my nerves." As you get farther in the book shes not as bad but she always has this whinnyness to her and the oh woe is me attitude.
Aspen: There's not much I can say about Aspen that I really like hes another Oh Woe is me Character and when America does something nice for him he flips out on her and breaks up with her. Then later risks both his life and hers because he's changed his mind.
Prince Maxon: Prince Maxon I have to say is probably my favorite character. From the get go he is very sweet and understanding when America has a meltdown on the first night and calls him some very bad names he takes it like a champ and its still nice to her. And he truly cares about the people in his kingdom.
I'm getting tired of love triangles in YA books and this one has one which is another point against this book. The writing of this book is also very juvenile (very reminiscent of Stephanie Meyer with Twilight). Another mark against this book also at one point in this book the author gets very crude when someone from The Selection process asks America if shes a virgin have her sign a contract that says she is then proceeds to tell her that if the prince propositions her she can't say no. This was problem number 3 these kind of things really shouldn't be in a YA book the characters in most these books range from the age of 15-17 and the reading audience is the same age it was very tastelessly done.
Now the whole book wasn't bad there were some interesting prospects to this book. How the kingdom came to be, Why they do The Selection, and the rebels. As well as a few of the minor characters in the book including Americas new friend Marlee and her younger sister May.
Theres allot about this book I didn't like and there was allot that I did like and it did the right thing by ending on a cliffhanger and leaving me wanting to know what happens so once The Elite comes out I will probably pick it up and read it as well If you like dystopia and if you like the TV show The Bachelor you should deff pick this book up and give it a read I give this book a
3.5 out of 5 and Yes I would recommend it to some.
