Oy, Glee Fans!
Okay. I feel the need to try and dissect this because dammit, I just don't understand it.
Let's start with where I'm coming from:
1. It's no secret I enjoy Will/Emma, or either character individually.
2. I overall prefer the "adult:" storylines. This is not new--so many fandoms of mine "suffer" from this same quality, namely loving the adult characters over the more prevalent "kid" characters (see: Treasure Planet, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Space Cases).
3. I certainly don't HATE any of the characters, save for maybe Terri, whom I love to hate. I find some characters just hella boring.
4. I don't like that Will got "slutty" any more than you do.
That said, WTF is up with all the Will hate?
I acknowledge that some fans just never liked him, some hate that he left Terri (I will address this bs), and some just want to watch it for the teenagers because dammit, they're teenagers, but still, why all the hatin'.
Some argue he gets too much screen time. I submit that he is a main character, and has always been. I also submit that the same could be said about several other characters (Rachael, for instance, who by the way, gets too much flack for always being used as a singer. Let's face it fans--she's the best singer on the show HANDS DOWN. You might argue that Finn, who I believe is easily shadowed by Puck vocally, gets too many solos, but I digress).
Some argue that they don't think his behavior lately is becoming. Let's attack this on several fronts:
1. He's a slut.
Hell yeah, I agree with you that this is a problem. He's fresh out of a long-term relationship and hasn't played the field in 15 years and jumps on the first females he sees. Certainly this is no excuse, but he is human and therefore capable of making some unsavory mistakes (mistakes that piss me off as they mess with my 'ship).
2. He's a jerk for leaving Terri.
Say WHAT? Have you lost your effing minds? Last I checked, Terri lied and manipulated HIM. And not just over toilet brushes. Over a child. Let me spell this out for you: She was going to take his STUDENT'S baby and pass it off as HIS. FOR THE CHILD'S LIFETIME. This is TWISTED. While she certainly has issues and I certainly maintain that the "human" element applies to Terri as well, let's keep in mind that this is the same woman who outright confessed that the only reason the relationship worked was because he didn't "feel good about himself" and allowed her to control his life utterly. This is a poisonous woman. She did an AWFUL thing. He is justified in leaving her.
(Also, I want to pop in here and point out a little fan hypocrisy. Some of the same fangirls who hate on Will LOVE Quinn. They go all "OMG WILL IS SUCH AN AMORAL JERK" while simultaneously squealing every time Quinn is on screen. Let's think a minute about why this is STUPID; Quinn CHEATED on her boyfriend, LIED to her parents about her pregnancy, LIED to Finn about the fact that the baby was his and was going to, a la Terri, allow him to raise a child she KNEW wasn't his while all the while telling him it was. Will makes out with two women? JERK. Quinn lies to her teenage boyfriend about the baby she conceived behind his back with his best friend? OMG POOR QUINN. Again, I'm not trying to justify Will's obvious faux pas, and I'm perfectly neutral about Quinn's character, but let's call a spade a spade, huh? If you can forgive Quinn's transgressions, at least STFU about Will's.)
Some argue he's boring. Yeah, well I argue that Santana is freaking boring, but you don't see me spamming every minute about it.
Here's what it boils down to kiddies: We all have our favorites.
You will never convince me that Will isn't hot, talented, or interesting to watch.
You will never convince me that Emma isn't adorable and heartbreaking.
You will never convince me that Terri isn't a grade-A bitch, while still being oh-so-fun to hate on.
You will never convince me that Kurt isn't more than just a whiny little gay kid with serious issues. (Lay off the Kurt hate, huh? I'm sure being a teenaged gay kid is hard, so he's prone to do some crazy shit.)
You will never convince me that Artie isn't one of the most interesting male Glee members to watch.
You will never convince me that Puck is hot. (Though I'll readily admit that I enjoy watching him sing.) Same goes for Finn.
You will never convince me that Tina, Santana or Quinn are anything more than "Meh" at this point, or that any of them are particularly good singers (though I maintain that they aren't bad either).
You will never convince me that St.Berry is a good ship. Because it isn't. Really. Jesse's a fink. Period.
Also, the "Shelby is Rachael's mother" plot is fucking lame. I understand acknowledging the feelings Rachael has, but she has two Dads who have a veritable museum dedicated to her in their basement in boxes numbered by year. She has two perfectly good parents who love her and I think throwing Shelby in the fray kinda underminds that. (Also, does everyone in freakin' Lima have to be connected/related? If the speculation on the Will/Emma bombshell pans out, I will be even more annoyed. This vexation does not apply to Finn's Mom/Kurt's Dad, because, frankly, they're both badass and I love watching them.)
We all agree that Sue is rad. Keep being awesome on this front.
I think the point is, we all have shit that we hate. We all have songs that we hate ("The Boy is Mine" was NOT that good! That episode had a smashing rendition of "The Lady is a Tramp" and "Rose's Turn" and you latch on that? For SHAME. Also, you think there's too much Rachael singing? Listen again to "Don't Rain on My Parade," fuckers. Do it now. Yeah. I fucking thought so. You know that shit's one of the best songs on the show to DATE.) We all have characters we hate (No one hates Brittany. If you do, you're a dirty Commie.). And, of course, I can feel ship wars I haven't seen since the days of Avatar (LOL ZUTARA) on the horizon, so it'll probably get worse before it gets better.
Can't we just agree to disagree? I won't bring you down if you don't bring me down. Let's enjoy forums like GLEECLUB and celebrate the show in general, rather than let it grow into a cesspool of "NO, YOUR WRONG. HE/SHE/IT SUCKS. WE WILL NOW HOW OVER 9000 THREADS ABOUT THIS." Save your hate/misplaced adoration for the appropriate journals. I stay away from certain ones for a reason.
