Iowa City named world's Third City of Literature by the U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

But, you know, Iowa is just a place full of weird Maharishi cultists and ugly corn fields -- a place to escape from, right, STEPHEN FRY?

Yeah, I'm still talking about that! But what I really wanted to say is how proud I am about this. There's a reason so many international people have settled here! My Russian teacher was just talking a couple of days ago about how she came to visit the University of Iowa and saw that Iowa City was not like any other city in the US, and knew she wanted to stay here. And my Spanish Creative Writing Workshop professor (Roberto Ampuero, a novelist with some serious literary creds in the Spanish-speaking world) was saying yesterday how he was invited here by the International Writer's Program out of nowhere, without knowing anything about Iowa City, and ended up staying. I'm proud that this city (despite the recent influx of drunk, loud, dumb, rich kids from our neighbor to the east since the UI lowered its tuition standards) can attract such a diverse crowd of intellectual people, and I'm very happy to be able to live here.
