stares at fic - wonders when it became such a HUGE character study....gives up trying to figure out....
*coughs* yeah - the fic I am presently working on has scared me...again
anyhoo - have been finding new pretties - and some not so pretties (as a note that wasn't me - that was
charlies_dragon who felt like sharing)
also - is it me or is it damned hard to find well written/non scary scottish dialect in fics?? there are some that are sending me back to the days of living in cornwall...and that's just scary - through I'll give it to people, it is another of the celtic language centers - but still - you could always just write in plain english and not worry about accenting the speech.
And as a note? The Americanized scots are driving me insane. As are the english scots (or at the very least someone was watching 10/11 era Doctor Who while writing the fic...). *head desk*
I'll admit - my efforts at a scots accent in fic wasn't perfect - but at least I wasn't constantly using Ye's and yer's *shudders* - the main thing people don't seem to grasp is the slightly different speech pattern that exists - in the fic cd sent me today - it was all Ye's and yer's in american speech....the girl even said 'awesome'...
But yeah - the basics - don't use ye or yer - there are certain situation were it works - but not commonly - scots just use a kinda elongated you, which is impossible to write
-not isn't really used it's nay/nae
-i's sometimes come out as ee, w's as o - as in 'heeland coo'
- they roll their r's - but again, you can't write that
other than that - it's just avoiding dropping in anything too english/american - ie 'cuppa', 'awesome' - or any other slang you can think of (in other words - avoid slang) - however, if you can find a handy scot to speak to while writing, randomly throw phrases at them (or just get them to beta the fic...) find out slang that you can use.
And people - don't forget (like TPTB do) research is KEY - as it means you don't have a scot talking about their favourite soccer team - and you know a bit about the character's background (if from TV) as it can effect the way a character reacts/what they would casually talk about. For example, my teacher in P7 (last year of primary school in scotland) was from Glasgow, where your religion will dictate which football team you support and it's more likely that you support the same team as the rest of your family.
So yeah - research and find yourself a pet scot *coughs* a scottish friend.
