La La Land

OKay - so film review time - me and ma went to see La La Land....two weeks ago.

Given all the hype and various comments about it - I wanted to put my thoughts down on here.

My opinion: It's not a good film. It's a badly paced, visually frustrating, oddly plotted film.

It will probably win all the things. If you go see it, expect to get bored/frustrated, especially if you have any investment in female characters. If you go expecting that then enjoy it, great ;)

Ok so - Ryan Gosling's character Sebastian is the focus, for all you get a lot of Mia (Emma Stone), she's never really rounded out. That said Sebastian is frustrating in some ways as well.

Surprisingly - they both have dreams *gasp* - by the end of the film they have both accomplished those dreams - Sebastian on his own and Mia because of Sebastian - but they aren't together.

In a weird flashback/dream sequence and alternate version happens were she gets her dream, but he doesn't get his, but they're together. (Aka he only gets his dream without her - he can't have both, because, reasons)

For some extra random reason Mia (who is never single long - she has a random boyfriend pre Seb who doesn't talk to her just uses her as a pretty prop) has acquired a husband and four-ish year old daughter in the real timeline five years after leaving Seb (an older husband - who she would have had to meet straight after getting to Paris to have a child as old as shown - like her and Seb's kid in the flashback/dream is younger?!?)

There isn't a lot of plot - things happen, time passes, random events happen that you can't quite follow what they are and the showy filming and costuming drove us both nuts.

The first half of the film - for reasons - everyone but Seb is always in bright block primary colours. I honestly thought Mia and her random girl friends who lasted briefly were going to be colour coded so you could tell them apart. (They get snippets/exist because she has to have girl friends? until she moves in with him and them they are background - while his sister gets a relationship and marries and he has guy friends with lives....)

Once Mia is dating Seb she discovers non-primary block colours and my eyes recovered a bit.

Seriously, the block primary colours is that in your face it was the first thing we said after we got out. We just had to express our relief that it didn't last the whole film.

And Jazz. Urgh.

It needs to be said that we also saw Whiplash. Which is a worse film and TERRIBLE with women to the point they almost don't exist. Just weirdness. o.o

So yes Jazz is this guy's thing.

And the main, gets stuck in head, chord sequence from La La Land isn't really Jazzy? It's weird.

The music isn't terrible. The dancing is ok. The aerial dancing is just weird.

So in conclusion. Meh.
