Had a crazy week or soooo.
Did two different kids/family sessions last week - and work has been crazy busy. We are going to be up on last years numbers (well, we're open 7 days a week at the mo - so def up on last year's 6.....but still over 200 most days is really good. Over 300 as we've had a good few days recently \o/)
Have seen Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad.
I really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond
I did not expect to like it - given the first trailer - but in the end people's comments, and well new Star Trek AND Idris, I couldn't not go (espec as had enough points for free ticket).
It was fair better than 'Into Darkness' and an actual original storyline *gasps* - all the women involved got a role and we had so many mixes of races, which is nice to have. Loved all the little touches, and giggled at a good few things. It had the good mix of serious and light hearted.
Yay for the women getting rank insignia (and sleeves) - pro-active new girl (played by the actress who was so impressive in Kingsmen). I liked that they actually had a 'it's hard to live in space in a closed community for a long time' and character arcs and....yeah.
It was good \o/
I have no idea what the new Star Trek series is going to be like (espec as it the lot who were responsible for Into Darkness :S - and it's apparently going to be between Original and TNG? (EDIT: Or Enterprise and Original as it turns out) So kinda between the two parts of Generations? And not focused on the captain, though you know, the others were ensemble?) IDEK - we'll see.
I spent all of Saturday out of the house - we had tickets to Bryan Adams at Lytham Festival - so I visited the wee independent cinema in St Anne's (Lytham St Anne's does not actually exist - there's Lytham, Ansdell, Fairhaven and St Anne's, which semi run into each over, but are separate places /random ;) though they get the Golf Open often enough some of you might have heard of it)
It really cheap and there's only like 35 seats in each screen which is crazy given they get the new releases (like £4 for a ticket v £6.50 at Odeon). It's a little strange and you are close to the screen so neck ache, but a good find.
I enjoyed Suicide Squad
It was a good film - and it felt, to me, like they made a bit of recognising the problematic elements (like they are bad guys, the way they are treated isn't necessarily good, they are still people was framed well, or seemed to be). I liked seeing Batman (and maybe squealed a little) and the Flash and their relationships to them (and set up their place in DC movie verse now - given half of them have been in Arrow/The Flash...)
I felt like.....we could have done without the Joker? That was the bit that was just problematic to be honest - they didn't overly romanticize it, but they didn't show it as iffy as they could have. It feels like he's the Ben Solo of the film TBH. People are all over the Joker, who wasn't great and who is a TERRIBLE person.
Like what is it with people and the attitude when the white guy isn't the hero? Or even the focus of the narrative. It happened with the new Star Wars and there was some muttering, because everyone was talking about Ren, but underplaying the others.
I EXPECTED the mixed reviews, because this film focuses on mostly non-white people and women. I'm surprised I haven't seen more Rick loving (cos white american guy, yay), maybe even some Captain Boomerang glee.
Like Amanda Waller is stone cold. But that's Amanda Waller - she is the darker end of grey. But if she were a white guy, people would be all over that. It makes me sad that the Joker gets so much attention, and his actor, who tbh gets farrrrr too much attention most of the time these days. :/
I liked the way the characters were framed - Deadshot, never killed a woman or a child - who has a daughter who is his world. Harley, the grey area of a woman she is (she needs taking home, but not rescuing as such). Diablo, who gets the best redemption arc he could hope for. Croc, the misunderstood, bad guy because that's what people expected.
It's got layers - it did a hell of a lot, with a lot of characters - but didn't feel rushed or crammed in. It had a consistent plot and it worked.
We had SIX women who got to have a part in the plot! GASP. Not exactly normal in a film, let alone a superhero movie, (Enchantress and June Moone being separate people, Amanda, Harley, Katana and Zoe). We had SIX non white people who got to have a part in the plot as well. Ditto for the 'well that's a high number' because like Marvel manages three, if they are trying really hard and they're pretty much all men.
You can add in a seventh ish, if you're being kind. Slipknot - I am sad that he was the default 'guy to die to prove they would do it' - and it was sooooo obvious it was going to be him. Like, 1 minute of Adam Beach *pouts*.
But overall, well done DC.
St Anne's is really nice as well. If you ever visit Blackpool it's worth a little side trip, there are lots of little local stores (with just a few big chains mixed in). It was a bit surreal, driving from Blackpool Airport down the coast, because the Butlins/Pontins is now a housing estate, nestled into the sand dunes (I do not envy those people the hell of trying to have a green garden there!).
I found a good book shop (and got four chalet school books! I am trying to get copies of them all, slowly but surely). Some fabric/craft shops, a few bakeries and a nice little pet shop (and mostly the people were nice - I talked to guy in the book shop and woman in the pet shop who were v friendly). Got a treat ball for the crazy kittens.
Bryan Adams was good. Haven't done that kind of gig before (have done standing only and variety of indoor, but never outdoor standing.) Fun was had and da snarked about me obviously enjoying the crazy backroad driving home.
Am on to the last Temeraire book and will do a 'Temeraire' reaction post when done - because there are thoughts and commentary to be had ;) - Also back to the Chalet School book reading (have fic to write - but will need a beta for that....).
(And in random 'I have totally not been eyeing the behind the scenes pics coming out and internally swearing' - it appears that due to stuff my fav character may be out of the one US show I try to watch as it airs.....dang it. (More annoying because the other person involved isn't nice...so it's like shouldn;t have happened, but you can see how?) *flails a little* ) - Yes I am that person. I mean, generally I watch for specific characters, so like with SGA after Carson and Elizabeth I didn't try to catch up so much, Doyle was totally my main guy in Angel (so heh yeah), so I tend to keep an eye for times when a show might stop having the characters I am invested in. (Because I get invested, and SGA was honest to god painful for teenage me).
I know I'm safe with Elementary mind - but most shows I watch are ensembles. I still haven't watched all of season five of Lost Girl (and it's Faebles convention in.....just over a month? o.O) and I never finished the back half of BSG.......
