My dad was a DIY kind of guy - he fixed most everything around the house when I was growing up, and usually with an actual minimum of cursing and screaming (except for wallpapering - my mother and I would actually arrange to be out of the house all weekend when he was wallpapering to spare him our presence and us his frustration). All in all a pretty good gig.
Anyway.
After a few minutes or hours of working on something, and it continuing to refuse to go any way resembling right, he used to look at me and say, in his way:
"You know what the definition of insanity is, Cliff? It's doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result."
By that measure, Dad, I'm completely goddamn bughouse crazy. I keep trying to find different ways, but in the end, I'm still trying to do the same thing, praying for a different result.
