He was the only one left, the only one who could care for them. Their mother was dead, their father was dead, and it all came down to him. If he did not care for them, take them as his own, who would? There was no one left. The town was a mere shadow of its former self. Global Dynamics didn’t even exist anymore, and the government had frozen all funding to Eureka. Some people that had survived the incident had moved away, hoping there would be greener pastures, somewhere beyond the smouldering rubble of this wasteland. But Jack couldn’t leave, and not just because he was the Sherriff. He was connected to this town, dammit! It was a part of him, and it had been for the past four years. He wondered what it would have been like, if he had never come to Eureka. He would never have met these people, never fallen in love, and never lost that love. He had to be strong now, for the kids, his kids, for they could be no one else’s. Zoe, who was his in blood and had been with him every day of these last four years; Kevin who had changed so much since they had met, and continued to surprise him every day; and Jenna, so young still, she was not even two years old. It had been quite a few years since Jack had taken care of a child so young, but he was determined to do it; for her. He owed her that much, and so much more. He owed her his life.
