How to go from
to
Tutorial is for Photoshop CS2. Do NOT copy it exactly
First, I took this picture and cropped it to 100x100 and sharpened it.
Next I took a texture from inxsomniax that I cropped down from a larger texture and set it to hard light 70%.
Then I took my base and duplicated it, dragged it on top and set it to Lighten 100%. You can't realllly tell the difference, but it brings back some of his skintone.
Duplicated it and dragged to top again, and set it to soft light 100%.
Then I duplicated the soft light layer again and set it to 50%.
Next I added this texture and set it to Multiply 100%.
Next this texture by tre-xture, rotated it horizontally and set it to soft light 100%.
Next I added (part of) a brush by 77words in white.
Lastly, a 4 px border. (I am making a set of GD icons, so that's what they have in common, just the plain black border)
