Last night I dreamed I was being held captive somehow, some kind of indentured servitude. My captor-cum-employer had me living in a tent, but I still had my cell phone, wallet, plenty of clothes, etc. I decided to escape, but I realized that if I took my cell phone along and called someone for help, it could be used to track me. I considered whether the police would help my captors get that info, treating me like the criminal, and I concluded that I had no reason to believe the police would not work against me, either out of ignorance or intentional collaboration with wrongdoers. But I didn't want to lose the contact info for everyone (like most people these days, I keep phone numbers only in my cell phone, not written down or memorized). So I took the SIM card out, took it along, and made good my escape.
This is at least the
second security-related dream I've had, and I'm not even in the field! Darn all you security geeks for giving me paranoid dreams. Plus it seems most of you are gadding about D.C. at some conference, hanging out together, and I don't get to see you. I miss you, tinfoil hat brigade.
