1. It is 101 degrees outside (and apparently hit 102 at some point), breaking a 77-year record for D.C.
2. It's also Restaurant Week, so today some coworkers and I went to a fancy seafood restaurant for a prix fixe three-course lunch that was crazy delicious.
3. Between that lightning-quick memo and my brief, I worked for 10 hours yesterday. I was more productive from 5 to 7 PM than I had been in the two days leading up to that time, I swear.
4. Despite sitting in on a press briefing for over an hour and going out to a long lunch, I was super productive again today. It's 6:15 and I'm still at work.
5. I'm still here because Brendan, aka B-Mac, from my law school flew into town and is currently en route to meet up with me for dinner at 6:30.
6. We were going to take the Metro Red Line to Dupont Circle and go to Zorba's, but the Red Line is closed down due to a Suspicious Package at Dupont Circle, so we will dine elsewhere so as not to get blowed up. "Elsewhere" meaning "close to my office, which is on the Orange Line, as is my house."
7. K IS HERE. Well, in Maryland. I'm'a call him when I'm done with dinner and we will rendezvous chez moi. Ooh!
8. Speaking (of) French, I got to give some francophone tourists directions en français on Sunday. My six years of studying French have now proved useful for I believe the second time ever in the United States. (The first time was when starofpersia and I escorted young tourist gentlemen Pierre et Benoit around San Francisco back in like 1999.) Hate the people, love their useless language.
9. Did I mention, I GET TO SEE K TONIGHT?!
10. My productivity is actually a bad thing, apparently, since my supervisor is disturbed that I'm taking forever on this brief and it's now 26 pages long and I still have another whole section of it, plus the conclusion, to write. (Not to mention all the other stuff that I can't write that the Real Attorneys have to add to the brief later.) Did you know there are page limits when you submit a brief to an appeals court? There are! But I can't figure out what that page limit is for amicus briefs (as opposed to briefs by the parties). FRAP Rule 37 is unenlightening on this point. Good thing this is just a draft!
11. I love First Amendment law even more than I hate international law and comity doctrine. First Amendment decisions are full of beautiful lofty language that makes me remember why I undertook the miserable three-year death march that is law school.
12. cipherpunk also gets in today (and if he ever responds to the E-MAIL I SENT HIM, we'll get together), but as he has been in Iowa, not Seattle, he is probably more prepared for the triple digit heat than Brendan or K are. Still, they all picked a fine day to arrive in D.C. WELCOME TO HELL, SUCKERS!
13. God damn it, I have my weekly online one-hour chatroom seminar (stupid BS requirement for my externship) at 8:30 tonight. I gotta be home and in front of my laptop by then. Hurry up, Brendan!
14. There's an alternate seminar session on Sundays if you can't make Wednesdays, but I sure as hell am not waiting for Sunday because K and I plan to go to the Outer Banks this weekend. It's like 400 miles. No biggie.

suspicious packages, k, work, dc, french, friends
