He loved him. It took Steve a long time to admit it, but once he had, well, things had never been better.
"Hard to believe just a few years ago we were strangers," Danny said as they sat down to eat supper.
"Why is that so hard to believe? We're all strangers at some point." Steve said as he ate some of his salad.
"True. But we were strangers that did not like each other. Okay, at least I didn't like you, maybe you liked me but I know I did not like you."
"You did. You just tried your best not to like me."
"Yeah, I liked you so much, I punched you."
Steve laughed. "Maybe you're right. Now, let's finish eating and enjoy the fact we're no longer strangers that hate each other."

"Why do you fight with Uncle Steve all the time?"
"We don't fight all the time."
Grace stared at her father. "You don't?"
"Banter. Friendly banter. Maybe a bicker. Not a fight."
"Uncle Chin said you punched Uncle Steve once."
Danny coughed. "Yeah, well, that was a long time ago."
"But you hit him."
"Yes, I did. And I told him I didn't like him."
"But you love him."
"I didn't love him then. Not when I punched him."
"Well, duh, of course not. If you loved him you wouldn't punch him." Grace paused a moment before she asked. "If a boy is mean in school, does he like me or does he hate me?"
He chuckled. "I guess that all depends, Monkey. Is he pulling your hair or something like that?"
"When I have pigtails."
"Yeah, he just might like you then. But you don't like him, right?"
Grace was quiet.
"No, no, no, Monkey. Please tell me you don't like a boy that pulls your hair."
"Did Uncle Steve pull your hair?"
Danny looked at Grace and focused long and hard before he asked what she meant.
"I mean, did he do something rude to you to show he loved you?"
He grinned. "Well, maybe that's where all of the bickering came in."
"Fighting."
"Fine. Fighting. So you're saying that Steve fighting with me is just like if he pulled my hair?"
"Yes."
"And you like that boy, don't you?"
"Yes."
Danny could do nothing but shake his head as he realized it was going to be a long and winding road ahead for all of them.
