Let it shine.

The father held his crying child in his arms and began to sing a song.

The song was one the father had heard a thousand times before. A song he himself had sung hundreds of times. The words came easily, fluidly from memory.

And he understood them. They were self-referential, self-empowering, an anthem for how he would be in a world full of darkness.

But how will he provide for this child? And how will he keep this child safe? And how can he ensure this child knows the extent of his love?

Standing there, holding his sleeping child in his arms, he hears the words of the song for the first time, and understands. He knows that his hopes, his fears, and his dreams for his child will manifest themselves in ways he cannot now imagine or comprehend or even control. But the song that used to be about himself, is now about his child, the light that was literally loved into existence. And he smiles at the simplicity of it, the beautiful logic of dying to oneself, and he embraces it.

A father holds his child in his arms and sings again, the anthem of his new mission.
This little light of mine
I'm gonna let it shine...

love
