California, here we come

Just read a post on my friend Phil's blog.

He's in Amsterdam (on a longer tri-continental trip) and wrote about how fascinated Internationals are with the OC. So sad that America's lamest locale now seems exotic and interesting.

The big joke when the show started was how clueless all those folks are. Despite having the money to afford a better education, they FLOOD the California state school system (yay UC Irvine!), drop wads of cash on logoed wear with every possible picture of a hibiscus flower imaginable, and are generally wastes of space. Of course, they have money, so there's no need to actually do anything of value. (no off to those i know from the OC, altho for me to know someone would mean they would have to actually leave their sunny, pampered lives and therefore would be a moot point)

The show evolved from the Colin Hanks (who makes a guest appearance in Season One's "The Vegas" as the star of "The Valley," an OC like tv show the characters watch to give them a vehicle to address the comments and rumors garnered by the OC itself) film of a similar name, about a guy facing being stuck amongst his lame friends with no ambition or future (think Spicoli with bucks) who instead decides to strive for Stanford...this is the real oc. Complete with deadbeat stoner bro, Jack Black.

The show has it's own charms: well written, and deliciously self-referencial. Ironically, everyone's favorite part about the tv show is Seth Cohen a nerdy un-athletic guy with a New York, Jewish wit. He doesn't even have a CAR people! What kind of OC is that? Summer, originally an uber-bitch, (also a part written for a blonde) has now become the sweet girl next door, while Marissa is slowly coming across as the whiny spoiled brat she is (yuck, shut up!). Jimmy, the dude-ish adult who never really grew up, has left the show, as has Haley, the other spoiled child of fortune who never really had to earn her own keep.

So there's a little rant and rave...man, can't wait until thursday, esp since i hear demi moore is making an appearance this season as a relative of the Roberts family (Summer's step-mom perhaps?). 2 weeks back (last week was a rerun) I had the pleasure of watching with a coed crew, and lemme tell you, boys love the OC as well (not the ones watching just to see the same-sex make out sessions -- PB --)
