Somewhere in the former communist city, in an area surrounded by Soviet style apartment buildings, lies a lonely blue Boston Red Sox hat that fell, unnoticed, from my lap while I was going over many, many cobble-stone streets. I believe I was the first Brenner to return to Dresden since my Grandfather Max left in 1882. I didn't stay too long myself only a few hours. I would have stayed longer if anything were open, note to self never go to Dresden on a Sunday. I could purchase no goodies for family from the city where we come from because there was nothing open.
I did get many pictures from the city that has been under construction since the Allies fire bombed the city in Feb of 1945. They are in a constant state of rebuilding. At first when I arrived I noticed most of the stone structures were blackened, this happens in Europe a lot due to pollution, however these buildings were blacked due to the firebombing. It was very moving. I then thought to my history in that more persons were killed there than in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I believe more than those two combined. I would have loved to have stayed, but I could not get into a hostel for the night so I was forced to retreat to Berlin.
This city is huge, and currently it is raining heavily. So I am taking the evening to relax in my hostel. I am still tired, and I am beginning to think that my bad allergies are actually a cold. All the cigarette smoke isn't helping that either.
Speaking of which three people just lit up near me. I can't take it so I am going to go lie down.
Cheers!
