I've seen it. Brokeback Mountain. And it is good, yes. So click below for my not-objective-at-all view of it. And please forgive the crapness of the writing. I feel rather stunned still and it's affecting my cerebral cortex.
I won't deal with the plot here, as that is known to most if not all of us. Allow me instead to dwell on the sheer beautiful honesty of it, and the clarity, and the way I felt at the end that I had fucking learnt something about the nature of love and the nature of what it means to be human.
What is it about? It's not about gay cowboys. The connection between Jack and Ennis surpasses gender. You can see it sparking into life from the second they lay eyes on each other, in all its warmth and inevitability. It's all there in the looks and silences and the way they circle each other, slowly, gently, to the point where they are destined to meet. The apex, the summmit of happiness for both of them, reached in the first hour of the film. Brokeback. Their Eden. Even though I knew it was coming, it hurt like fuck to watch them evict themselves from paradise.
And when they part that first time, my heart froze because I knew that it was downhill from there, and that the rest would be a series of small tragedies, played out over two decades.
Heath shines. Jake shines. At times Jake was so opulently sexy and angelic (because he is, he's Ennis' angel if he did but know it) that I realised I was holding my breath for longer than is advisable.
See this film my loves. See it twice. Watch the kissing, of course, for it is just what you'd hope. Revel in the cinematography which is exceptional. Marvel, if you will, at the moustache. But most of all I think you'll be glad that this film asserts a basic truth - that love is love. And it knows no boundaries and will not be tied.
